Salmen war an den Universitäten Saa…rbrücken, Kiel und Innsbruck tätig und hatte Gastprofessuren in den USA, Israel und der Schweiz. Er gehört zu den Wissenschaftlern, die ihre Laufbahn im Widerstand gegen das Nazi-Regime begannen und als Zeugen eines akademischen Neuanfangs fortsetzten. Sein Lebensbericht bietet einen breiten, kritischen Blick auf dramatische persönliche und fachliche Entscheidungen, glückliche Begegnungen und mühsame Prozesse, während er versuchte, musikwissenschaftliche Reflexionen im Kontext der Kultur- und Sozialgeschichte zu definieren. Seine Ausführungen stehen unter dem Motto eines Liedes aus dem Lochamer-Liederbuch von 1460, dessen textkritische Herausgabe den Beginn seiner Karriere 1949 markierte. Der Untertitel deutet an, dass er oft im Widerspruch zu den Zeiten stand, die er beschreibt, und dass er bis heute unermüdlich mit seinen Arbeiten zur Musikikonographie, Tanz- und Sozialgeschichte erweiterte Perspektiven einfordert.
