Schon wäh…rend seiner Assistentenzeit an der Klinik E i s e l s b e wandte r g D e n k sein Interesse der Thoraxchirurgie in besonderem Maße zu, die er seither in Österreich zum Erfolg führte. Zahlreiche seiner Schüler, die er im Laufe seiner jahrzehntelangen Tätigkeit als klinischer Lehrer herangebildet hat, sind heute als Thoraxchirurgen in leitender Stellung tätig. Seit Jahren beschäftigte sich Denk besonders mit den Problemen der Lungen resektion und konnte schon 1938 die erste einzeitige Lobektomie wegen Bronchiektasien erfolgreich ausführen. Durch die enorm erschwerten Arbeitsbedingungen 'in den folgen den Kriegsjahren waren die Fortschritte auf dem Gebiete der Lungenresektionen weit gehend gehemmt, so daß nur vereinzelte derartige Operationen durchgeführt werden konnten. Als nach Kriegsende die großen Erfolge des Vestens auf thoraxchirurgischem Gebiet bekannt wurden, war es D e n k, der durch Einsatz seiner ganzen Persönlichkeit diesen Vorsprung wieder einholte. Es ist daher nicht verwunderlich, daß sich in den letzten Jahren ein sehr großes thoraxchirurgisches Krankengut an seiner Klinik konzen trierte. Schon Anfang 194 7 konnte D e n k, noch mit unzulänglichen technischen Hilfs mitteln, die erste erfolgreiche Pneumonektomie wegen Bronchuscarcinom durchführen. In den folgenden Jahren nahm der Zustrom an Bronchuscarcinomkranken immer weiter zu, so daß wir derzeit über mehr als 1200 derartige Fälle verfügen.
