Purple cloth covers, elaborate blind stamped design on front and back covers with gilt stamps on front and spine. Frontispiece is of negroes dancing in costume - protected by tissue guard. Book is tight & solid. Two of the other titles listed on the title page (Nature and Human Nature [1856] & Wise Saws and Modern Instances [1855-58]) were published after the release of The Old Judge which was originally published in 1849. This book was considered one of his best looking at Nova Scotian life - "an Englishman is introduced to Nova Scotian life through the eyes of two narrators: the elderly Judge Sandford and his young nephew, the lawyer Mr. Barclay.". Illustrated by J. Saddler Frontispiece (illustrator).
