This book, featuring imaginary letters and journals of his fellow travelers, was published on the coat tails of his wildly popular "Sam Slick" series. It is said to have inspired Mark Twain. Largely forgotten today, Sam Slic…k invented many expressions still in common use - "Quick as a wink," "Raining cats and dogs," and "The early bird gets the worm," to name but a few. (No tell what you'll find on Google!) First edition. Bound in half crimson morocco over marbled boards. Minor cover wear, very good condition.

Book is tight & solid. Two of the other titles listed on the title page (Nature and Human Nature [1856] & Wise Saws and Modern Instances [1855-58]) were published after the release of The Old Judge which was originally published in 1849. This book was considered one of his best looking at Nova Scotian life - "an Englishman is introduced to Nova Scotian life through the eyes of two narrators: the elderly Judge Sandford and his young nephew, the lawyer Mr. Barclay.". Illustrated by J. Saddler Frontispiece (illustrator).
