xxiii, (1), 2-323 pp. Haliburton, a native Nova Scotian, sailed from Bristol England to New York in 1839. This book, featuring imaginary letters and journals of his fellow travelers, was published on the coat tails of his wildly popular "Sam Slick" series. It is said to have inspired Mark Twain. Largely forgotten today, Sam Slick invented many expressions still in common use - "Quick as a wink," "Raining cats and dogs," and "The early bird gets the worm," to name but a few. (No tell what you'll find on Google!) First edition. Bound in half crimson morocco over marbled boards. Minor cover wear, very good condition.
