Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 26 silkscreen plates on thick laid sheets (watermarked: Abbey Mills Greenfield with coronet emblem). Utterly charming and joyful. It has been avidly owned. The boards are much worn, scuffed and marked all about. They are steady and sweet. The contents are full of character. Each letter of the alphabet is printed on one side of each page only, leaving the other side blank. Both the verses and illustrations are utterly enchanting. The pages do have some foxing, some aging marks, some light wear. However, they are healthy, firm, colourful, exquisitely-imagined, venerably elegant. fk. Add to basketPaper boards. Condition: Good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR-ILLUSTRATOR. 4to, pp. [58, comprising 26 vibrantly coloured plates on facing pages, blanks in-between]. Blue buckram-backed pictorial paper boards. Edges untrimmed. Well-handled: grubby, liquid-stained, worn and bumped. Inscribed in brown ink to half-title/ffep: "To Lady Forbes Robertson, with kind regards, from, Ruth Sandys. 1930.", spotted, some inky finger marks, taped repair to 5cm closed tear to plate 'B'. Else, clean and bright. Good. JiscLHD locates only four copies in British research institutions (BL, Bodleian, NLS & NLW/ LGC). An interesting association copy of Ruth Sandys' colourful illustrated and alliterative Art Deco alphabet, uniting two women and near contemporaries who worked in the early C20th 'creative industries', being inscribed to the American Shakespearean actor Gertrude Elliott, under her married name: "To Lady Forbes-Robertson, with kind regards, from, Ruth Sandys. 1930." The British artist Ruth Sandys (1880-1941) was a children's illustrator and commercial artist, who designed the logo and posters for the shoe firm Lilley and Skinner Ltd (1925-30), as well as posters for the London Underground in 1925. She was one of seven children of the Pre-Raphaelite painter Frederick Sandys and his common law wife and muse Mary Jones, an actor who performed as Miss Clive. Gertrude Elliott (1874-1950) was an American stage and silent film actor, who married her fellow Shakespearean, the English theatre manager Johnston Forbes-Robertson. She was a co-founder and second President of the Actresses' Franchise League (from 1909). Though an alphabet, Sandys' book, seems to have been aimed at older children, or even their parents; by the year of publication and presentation, the elder Forbes-Robertson children were already adults, though their youngest daughter, Diana, was fourteen.…
