Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. The Hogarth Press, 1948. Signed limited edition of 750 copies. Hand numbered and signed by William Sansom. Buckram-backed marbled paper boards, lettered in gold at spine. Illustrated with five full-page plates after drawings by Lucian Freud. Toning to endpapers, minimal wear. An excellent copy in a nice example of the rare glassine dust jacket. ----- INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY LUCIAN FREUD: 'For Robert / Collis from / Lucian Christmas / 1954'. Dr Robert Collis was an internationally renowned writer, paediatrician and a pioneer in the treatment of tuberculosis and cerebral palsy. Collis had established a clinic for cerebral palsy patients in Dublin and Christy Brown was his first patient at this clinic. Collis mentored and proofread Brown's first attempt at an autobiography. My Left Foot was published in 1954 and Collis wrote the foreword. ----- Robert Collis was the younger brother of the writer and critic Maurice Collis. After a group exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in 1946, Maurice Collis wrote of Freud: 'the youngest of the young men here, shows remarkable skill. He may turn out the most gifted'. Lucian Freud was a regular visitor to Dublin between 1948 and 1956, and for a time shared a studio with the artist Patrick Swift in Hatch Street. ----- Freud's inscription is on the rear endpaper - upside down, as though mistakingly opened from the rear. The plain dust jacket giving no clue to the books correct orientation. ----- Copies of this book signed by Freud are rare. Another copy inscribed to Boris Kochno, with a self-portrait drawing by Freud, sold at Sotheby's in 2010 for £265k. ----- Provenance: Robert Collis, Private Collection, Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers, Ireland. ----- Please confirm availability BEFORE ordering. The great figurative artist Lucian Freud made numerous drawings throughout his twenties, before switching predominantly to oil painting. Condition: Very good. Copy no 80 of 750 copies, NUMBERED and SIGNED by SANSOM on limitation page. Early in his career Lucian Freud (1922 ? 2011) was deeply influenced by the Surrealists and produced many drawings, while later he moved predominantly to oil painting and became famous for his stark and alienated realist portraits. A 2011 retrospective of Freud's works-on-paper at Acquavella Galleries in New York featured original drawings that he made to illustrate Sansom's novella, notably a self-portrait of the young Lucian Freud that represents the book's protagonist. Written by William Sansom (1912 ? 1976), a British novelist and short story writer known for his descriptive prose, 'The Equilibriad' is a novella about a man who wakes up one morning to discover himself physically and psychologically aslant, able to walk only at a 45-degree angle. "William Sansom was once described as London's closest equivalent to Franz Kafka. He wrote in hallucinatory detail, bringing every image into pin-sharp focus." [The Independent, 23 Oct. 2011] The Hogarth Press was a British publishing house founded in 1917 by Leonard Woolf and Virginia Woolf. It was named after their house in Richmond where they began hand-printing books. During the interwar period the Hogarth Press grew from a hobby to a business and they used commercial printers. In 1938 Virginia Woolf relinquished her interest in the business to John Lehmnan. It was sold to Chatto & Windus in 1946. The Press published 527 titles between 1917 and 1946, including the works of the members of the Bloomsbury group, works on psychoanalysis, and translations of foreign works, especially from Russian.
