Seller: Twice-Loved Books, East Palestine, OH, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 2nd Edition. ** SCARCE ** FINE CONDITION ** HEAVY, OVERSIZED HARDCOVER BOOK ** PUBLISHED WITHOUT DUSTJACKET ** This book was published in 1966 by the Ceramic Book Company, England. It is a quality exact facsimile reprint of a book compiled and published in 1762 by the London printer Robert Sayer. It is believed there is only one complete copy of that 1762 printing left in existence, and this facsimile was made from that book. With 1500 illustrations that were widely used at the time as patterns in the production of porcelains and ceramics, furniture, and prints. With 400 pages, but NOTE each page is printed on only one side, so there are 200 numbered pages of pattern illustrations. Most pages contain multiple illustrations. In addition to the illustrations, the book contains instructions for the art of japanning and how to use the illustrations. The book is a thick, heavy oblong and is over 1 foot long, bound in sturdy red cloth-covered boards with bright embossed gilt lettering on the front and the spine, and with a Japanese-themed pictorial in gilt on the front of the book. The book is not quite As New, does show slight, very brief, very occasional signs of use, but has no significant defects. The book is quite clean and stain-free, square and straight, very firm and tight in its binding, no pages are loose, torn, folded, creased, or missing. The hinges are sound and undamaged, the corners are sharp and unbumped. All pages are clean and stain free, bright and white, and all illustrations are sharp and legible. There is no writing, underlining, highlighting, or other such markings anywhere in the book. Add to basketNo binding. 295 x 375 mm., early wash colour, in good condition. This birds eye plan and view of Gibraltar was first published in Thomas Salmon's 'Modern History' in the thirteenth volume. Many of the maps for this work begun in 1725 were engraved by Herman Moll. He was however to die in 1732 the year following this volumes' publication which might indicate why this does not appear to be by his hand. Indeed this plate itself is not included in any later issue. Many of the copperplates for this work were included in later Salmon and Moll publications. This example however bears the RARE IMPRINT of Robert Sayer and William Herbert (1718-95). Herbert set up business on London Bridge in 1748 and was an unhappy viewer of its demise at the hand of a fire in 1758. This places the date of issue of this work as c.1755 and as yet from an unidentified source or separately published. It bears two insets in the lower corners of a chart displaying the route from England to Gibraltar and one of the Bay of Gibraltar. Between these are two tables on 'Remarks on the Takeing Gibralter by the English' and 'Explaination of ye Seige by the Spaniards'. Beneath the latter appears the imprint of Sayer and Herbert.
