8vo. 5 x 9.75 in. which folds out into large 46 x 42 in. colour lithograhed map, linen-backed as issued. Black decorated ribbed cloth publisher's boards, gilt decorated lettering & ornament stamped on front cover (some scuffing, edgewear, light age toning to map, some lifting to linen backing on verso), still a VG copy. First edition, thus, of this updated National Publishing Co. New York map issued the same year as the Pan-American International Exposition held in Buffalo, NY and also the same year that the Scarborough brothers Walter (1862-1904), and Howard (1867-1905) had moved their mapping business from Portland, ME to Boston, MA. This map features inset maps for the "Southeastern Part of New York, including all the City of New York and Long Island," and "New York City and Vicinity," along with list of all Steam Railroads in New York. Prior to both their deaths from tuberculosis within just a few years, the brothers had opened an office in Indianapolis, IN, and the company later became the Scarborough Motor Guide Co. until 1933. Good. Printed on waxed silk. An unrepaired fold split along a fold line at edge. Wear and toning along original fold lines. Map is printed on both sides - Western Hemisphere, and Eastern Hemisphere, so both sides cannot be displayed at once. Folds into original red leather binder. Size 41 x 38 Inches. This is an impressive double sided 1907 map of the world by the London branch of the Scarborough Company. The map is on a single waxed silk sheet which has been printed on both sides: one detailing the Western Hemisphere, including the Americas, and the other detailing the Eastern Hemisphere, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Particular attention has been paid to the global railroad and steamship network. Rail and steam lines are here highlighted in red overprinting. Each side features a wealth of additional information, ranging from the locations of British and American Consulates, to detailed city indexes, and populations statistics. Publication History and Census This map was first issued in 1906 by the Scarborough Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. It was reissued in 1907 - the present example - for the London branch of the firm, based at 5 Arundel Street, Strand. We note 5 or six examples in institutional collections. Scarce to the market. Stunning map of the United States in two sheets comprising all 46 states plus the territories of Arizona and New Mexico. The two pieces framed could reach 90 inches. The map was done at a time when all long distance travel was done by railroad. Each map matches and the states have counties differentiated using different colors. The Typograph dominates the presentation. The map has all the railroads laid in place to connect the towns of each line. The map was produced when the railroads were still ascending to their peak passenger carrying time in 1920. Cuba is shown. The western sheet has an inset map of territories. This is quite the decorative piece. Very good condition but for several separations at the folds and one tear into the map. Separations of the folds and tears are expertly repaired with archival mending tape. mending tape. 79 inches x 35 inches approximately with each sheet 39 1/2 x 35 inches.

Very good. Minor wear along original fold lines. Slight wear along right index, where map was attached to binder. Verso reinforcement on some fold lines. Size 41 x 35 Inches. This is a large and colorful 1903 Scarborough map of the eastern United States. Scarborough became popular in the early 19th century due to their impressive size, high quality, and striking typography. A Closer Look This pocket map covers the United States East of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana, including parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. This map notes towns, villages, and cities throughout along with individually color-coded counties by state. Rivers, railroads, shipping lines, lakes (including the Great Lakes), mountains and a host of additional topographical features are also noted. Our Colonies The map is particularly interesting in its illustration of the newly acquired territories of the United States. A large inset of Cuba and another inset of Puerto Rico (Porto Rico) are included in the lower left quadrant of the map. As a result of the 1898 Spanish-American War, Spain ceded the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam to the United States, as well as relinquish sovereignty over Cuba. Cuba formally gained independence in 1902, just a few months prior to the printing of this map. Puerto Rico and Guam remain U.S. Territories. Another inset showing the territorial growth of the United States from 1776 - 1902 is included under the title. Other Details An index of the principal places in the United States is features along the left and right borders of the map. A thematic graph shows the growth of population from 1790 to 1900. The bottom right quadrant features two tables, the first noting the time of transit of Mail between the principal cities and the second features a distance table between important points in the United States. Another index listing the area and population of states and territories, with principal cities of each, is also included. Good. Wear on old fold lines, especially at fold intersections. Laid down on original linen. Stable. Size 40 x 58 Inches. This is a 1903 Scarborough Company map of Massachusetts. Scarborough maps are widely admired for their boldly distinctive typography. A Closer Look Coverage embraces Massachusetts in detail, including road and train connections to adjacent states. Towns, townships, and counties are noted along with lakes, rivers, hills, and other physical features. Several indexes appear in the upper right and lower left, illustrating Massachusetts's cities, towns, counties, and principal natural features. Major shipping lines and associated companies are illustrated with their routes from Boston to various ports. Publication History and Census The Scarborough Company created and published this map in 1903. It replaced an earlier 1901-1902 map bundling Massachusetts with Connecticut and Rhode Island. We see no issues postdating 1903. However, we do see a photo-facsimile of the map issued in 1990 at the Leventhal Center of the Boston Public Library. We see perhaps 10 examples in OCLC (including the above 1990 facsimile), although physical holdings are somewhat difficult to parse due to the over-cataloging of digital-only resources. The Philippines remained an unincorporated territory of the United States until its independence was formally recognized in 1946. The United States purchased the 'Department of Alaska' from the Russians in 1867, and organized as the Alaska Territory from 1884 to 1912. It was admitted to the Union as a state in 1959. • Good. Spot of discololration and light reinstated loss, upper left, to the right of compass rose. Size 41 x 40 Inches. An impressive large-format double-sided 1907 wall map of the world by the London branch of the Scarborough Company. It provides a wealth of information on infrastructure, transportation, economic development, and the relative military might of different countries. A Closer Look The map is on a single sheet which has been printed on both sides: one detailing the Western Hemisphere, including the Americas, and the other detailing the Eastern Hemisphere, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Particular attention has been paid to the global railroad, telegraph, and steamship networks. At the same time, caravan routes across Central Asia and ancient ruins are also marked. Information ranging from the locations of British and American Consulates, city indexes, and population statistics to ocean currents and the regular extent of ice pack in the Arctic is recorded, including in many tables and graphs surrounding the map. In the margins, flags of various countries are presented on the Western Hemisphere sheet, as are portraits of the rulers of countries on the Eastern Hemisphere sheet. Publication History and Census This map was first issued in 1906 by the Scarborough Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. It was reissued in 1907 - the present example - for the London branch of the firm, based at 5 Arundel Street, Strand. Already a scarce map, this example is especially so due to the inclusion of the flags and portraits of rulers. We note only two examples of this presentation in institutional collections - at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Pennsylvania State University - and it has only appeared on the market once in recent years.
