Hard. SCATTERGOOD, Samuel. Twelve Sermons Preached Upon Several Occasions. London: Printed by J.H. for Thomas Bennet, 1700. This volume represents a significant posthumous edition of the collected discourses of Samuel Scattergood, published just two years after the prominent theologian's death. Typically issued in a portable octavo format, the collection brings together the core pastoral and theological treatises that defined his career as a notable fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and later as the vicar of Blockley. The title page layout traditionally emphasizes the author's academic and ecclesiastical pedigree, framed by a formal imprint identifying the established booksellers of the London trade. The book's collation conforms to the standard signature sequences utilized for late Stuart religious compendiums, beginning with a general title leaf and moving into the individually partitioned texts. The publication history of these specific sermons reflects a steady demand among the late 17th-century reading public for articulate Anglican divinity, leading to this definitive turn-of-the-century printing. The publication of this work at the dawn of the eighteenth century captures a vital moment in the development of post-Restoration English homiletics and print culture. Scattergood was highly regarded by his contemporaries for a preaching style that balanced intellectual rigor with accessible, practical divinity, steering clear of the overly dense, scholastic prose of the earlier century. Historically, these sermons are celebrated for their clarity, providing modern scholars with clear insight into the theological landscape of the late Stuart Church of England as it navigated the complex socio-political shifts of the era. For bibliographers and cultural historians, this 1700 edition serves as an excellent case study in how the pastoral legacy of a prominent regional cleric was preserved and commodified for a wider national audience through the booming market for commercial religious print in post-Revolutionary London. The front board is very loose , the front endpapers have inscriptions on both pages with some previous tape staining and toning. The text block is tight and bright. Miscellaneous. …

Samuel Scattergood, 16461696, was entered at Trinity College, Cambridge, on 20 May 1662, and was admitted a scholar on 29 April 1664, at the same time as Sir Isaac Newton (Trin. Coll. Registers). He graduated B.A. in 1665, M.A. in 1669, and in the same year was elected a fellow of his college. In 1669, like his father, he was incorporated at Oxford on the opening of the Sheldonian Theatre. In the same year a Greek poem by him on the death of Queen Henrietta Maria was printed in Threni Cantabrigienses, Cambridge, 1669. He took holy orders, and preached at Newmarket on 2 April 1676. The sermon was published 'by his Majestie's special command'. It is not reprinted in his Collected Sermons.…
