Physiker und Mineraloge, Professor der Physik an der Wiener Handelsakademie, starb durch Selbstmord (1825-1867). Umfangreiche und bedeutsame wissenschaftliche Briefe an einen Kollegen in Frankreich. Entschuldigt die Verspätung seines Dankes mit seinem Mangel an Französisch-Kenntnissen und einer anderen Eigenschaft: Dass er "leider die üble Gewohnheit habe, das Briefschreiben von einem Tag auf den andern zu verschieben." Kommt dann auf die Aufsätze des Adressaten zu sprechen: ". Die Ansicht, daß der Zusammenhang zwischen Form und Zusammensetzung an möglichst vielen chemisch gut untersuchten Substanzen ermittelt werden soll, habe ich in meiner Abhandlung deshalb ausgesprochen, um die Chemiker zu veranlassen, daß sie ihre Verbindungen auch einer krystallographischen Untersuchung unterwerfen. Denn es geschieht leider sehr häufig, daß Gemenge aus verschiedenen Substanzen analysirt und als eigene Verbindungen beschrieben werden, welche man an den Krystallformen sehr leicht erkennen und sogar voneinander trennen kann. Ihre schönen Arbeiten, mein Herr, werden hier allgemein mit großem Interesse studiert und besonders ist es Herr Sectionsrath [Wilhelm] Haidinger, welcher dadurch, daß er dieselben in den Sitzungen der kais. Academie der Wissenschaften zur Sprache bringt, auch jene für dieselben interessirt, die sich nicht unmittelbar mit derartigen Untersuchungen abgeben. Ich für meinen Theil fühle mich glücklich, Ihre vortrefflichen Arbeiten zu besitzen .". Behandelt dann ausführlich das Problem, daß man in Frankreich und Deutschland in der Kristallographie unterschiedliche Bezeichnungen verwendet, und plädiert für die Einführung übereinstimmender Bezeichnungen [20.VI.1855]. - Im November bedankt er sich für "Mittheilungen", die ihm durch den Physiker Constantin Freiherr von Ettingshausen übermittelt worden seien. Da der Adressat offenbar die Bezeichnungen in der Kristallographie für unwichtig hielt, geht Schabus noch einmal auf dieses Problem ein. Anschließend kommentiert er seine neueste Veröffentlichung und verteidigt sie gegen ungerechtfertigte Kritik [14.XI.1855]. "J. Schabus, einen der Pioniere in der Entwicklung der Fachwissenschaft Kristallographie in Wien." "veröffentlichte in dieser Zeit seine fundamentalen Arbeiten zur Kristallographie.
