Der Maler zog sich nach Prerow auf dem Darß zurück und durchlebte gefährliche…und von Hungertod und Typhus bedrohte Zeiten. Seiner jüdischen Frau und ihrer Tochter Susanne gelang unabhängig voneinander die Flucht nach Großbritannien. Über Jahre schrieben sie sich, erst 1951 kam es zu einem Wiedersehen der drei in Berlin; kurz darauf starb Schaefer-Ast. Seine hier erstmals veröffentlichten Briefe an Frau und Tochter sind liebevolle private und berührende zeitgeschichtliche Zeugnisse eines Künstlers in schwierigsten Verhältnissen. Sie werden begleitet von Zeichnungen, deren schwungvoll-karger Strich die unverwechselbare Handschrift des Künstlers und seine den Widrigkeiten trotzende heitere Phantasie offenbaren.

The etchings are delightful and one will laugh at his curiously invented animals, which range from the bizarre to the cutely ingenious. Many… are quite recognizable, and the viewer shares in each individual animal's iconic reality, as with the wonderful cat on the dust-jacket with its trophy mouse. Schäfer-Ast (1890 - 1951) seems not to be that well known outside Germany, which is a shame, for his art has a sensitive quality imbued by the genius of his humor. The book has an explanatory afterword by Anne Gabrisch. The original etchings were made available by Schaefer - Ast's estate, and lithographically reproduced by H. F. Jutte.
