ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Shaper and Slotter Work (Serial 2222, Edition 1), Boring-Mill Work, and Working Chilled Iron. Three trades in one volume: the shaper and the slotter, the short-stroke machines that cut flat, angular and irregular surfaces and the keyways and internal work a planer could not reach, then vertical and horizontal boring mills including the turret-head vertical mill and the cylinder mills of the engine shops, and finally the specialized business of turning, grinding, planing and drilling chilled iron, work that defeated ordinary tool steel and drove the shift to high-speed steel. Richards Symposium for 1979 was held on April 23-24 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The theme of this symposium was 'The Actions of Taurine on Excitable Tissues.' Although taurine was discovered as a constituent of bile salts in 1857 by a chemist and an anatomist (Gmelin and Tiedemann), interest today centers chiefly on the extrahepatic actions of taurine, especially in brain, heart, and other excitable tissues. Research on taurine is clearly in a period of exponential growth.
