Er wurde dort 1851 zum Doktor der Medizin promoviert. 18…63 wurde Schauenstein außerordentlicher Professor für Staats- und gerichtliche Arzneikunde. Noch im selben Jahr erhielt er einen Ruf auf den neu errichteten Lehrstuhl für Gerichtliche Medizin an der Universität Graz. Neben Wien und Kiel gab es damit in Graz die dritte Lehrkanzel für gerichtliche Medizin im deutschsprachigen Raum. Schauenstein leitete das Institut bis 1892. Von 1868 bis 1869 und von 1886 bis 1887 war er Rektor der wieder errichteten Universität in Graz. Schauenstein erwarb sich besondere Verdienste um die forensische Toxikologie.

(1833-1870): "Es gereicht mir zu besonderem Vergnügen, Ihnen im Anschlusse den Brief des Badearztes in Baden-Baden, welchen ich gestern erhielt, zur gefälligen Einsichtnahme vorzulegen, da ich glaube, es werde Ihnen vielleicht erwünscht sein, mit dem Briefs…teller über die Einricht[un]g der Apparate zur Anwendung comprimirter Luft in Korrespondenz zu treten [.]" (ohne den erwähnten Brief). - Schauenstein wurde 1863 a.o.Prof. der Gerichtsmedizin; im selben Jahr folgte er einem Ruf als o.Prof. auf die neu errichtete Lehrkanzel für gerichtliche Medizin nach Graz. Er veröffentlichte u. a. ein "Lehrbuch der gerichtlichen Medizin". - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot jun., der älteste Sohn aus der ersten Ehe des weithin gerühmten Wiener Mediziners selben Namens (1807-84) mit Josefine Baronin Metzburg (1810-38) und Bruder des Historikers Alfred (1836-74) aus Rudolf sen. zweiter Ehe mit Antonie von Bergenthal (1820-46), zählt zu den Pionieren der "experimentell-physiologischen Richtung der Klimatologie" in Wien. "Die Folge der in [seinen] Aufsätzen mitgetheilten Untersuchungen war, daß die pneumatische Heilmethode in Deutschland vollends eingebürgert wurde, so daß sich jetzt kaum noch eine größere deutsche Stadt findet, die nicht eine pneumatische Anstalt besäße" (Annette von Vivenot: Geschichte der Familie v.
