Impresa tipografica al titolo, testo in carattere tondo, con passi in corsivo e greco. Dedica dell'autore alla regina di Svezia. Con un magnifico antiporta allegorico figurato disegnato dall'autore ed inciso da J.V. Meurs, 3 tavole incise f.t. e numerose illustrazioni silografate nel testo, anche a piena pagina, raffigiguranti navi e vascelli da guerra degli antichi Greci e Romani. Prima edizione di questo raro trattato storico militare navale in cui l'autore descrive tecniche di navigazione, metodi di costruzione, armamenti, elementi decorativi, accessori dell'equipaggio, ecc. G. Scheffer (Strasburgo 1621 - Upsala 1679) visse quasi sempre in Svezia ove tenne la cattedra di eloquenza e filosofia politica e poi di giurisprudenza ad Upsala, dedicandosi a studi di storia ed antiquaria. Scheffer pinx" and J [?] Bemme del sculp." The bottom right corner is inscribed in pencil. Date of publishing ca 1805. Etching on paper with broad margins; plate mark: 243 x 173 mm, total: 434 x 293 mm; state III/4 (although van Someren mentions 7 states) foxing on the margins and a wide damp stain on the bottom right, not affecting the plate; some smudges, otherwise fine condition. Cet ouvrage issu d'une commande royal, est l'un des plus anciens apports sur la recherche héraldique concernant le blason de l'ancien royaume de Suède et de ses origines. Il fut à l'origine d'in conflit entre le Dannemark et la Suède à propos du droit d'utiliser les trois couronnes dans les armoiries du royaume. A grand renforts d'exemples tirés de documents anciens, monnaies, sceaux, et éléments divers, Scheffer tente de prouver l'antériorité de l'usage héraldique des trois couronnes par les souverains suédois.
