Jahrhundert gängigen deutschen Sprichwörter von Andreas Schellhorn (1761-1845) als ein pädagogisch-moralisches Lehrgebäude zu verstehen, das der Menschenverbesserung dienen soll - wobei er auch "anstößige" Sprichwörter nicht auslässt. Bereichernd hinzu kommt der sprach- und kulturgeschichtliche Wert dieser Zusammenstellung. Die Einleitung des Herausgebers macht deutlich, daß in dem angeblich "sprichwortfeindlichen" Zeitalter der Aufklärung zweifelsfrei ein Interesse am volkssprachlichen Sprichwort weiterlebte. Aus der Vorrede des Autors: "Um aber den Gebrauch dieser Sammlung [.] zu erleichtern, ordnete ich [] die Sprichwörter, sprichwörtliche Redensarten und Denksprüche [.], und fügte ihnen nur die nöthigsten Erklärungen in den kürzesten und bestimmtesten Ausdrücken bey [.]. Weil aber viele Sprichwörter sowohl als Denksprüche nur halbwahr sind, und durch ausgedehnte Anwendung zu Irrthümern verleiten können, setzte ich hie und da kurze Einschränkungen und Warnungen über ihren Gebrauch bey. Andre, die ganz unrichtig sind, suchte ich durch entgegengesetzte Grundsätze zu berichtigen. Die niedrigen und pöbelhaften wollte ich lieber rügen und brandmarken, als ganz und gar auslassen, da sie doch wenigstens für die Sprache als Gewinn angesehen werden können. [.] die obenberührte Ordnung [.] beruhet auf zwey Realabtheilungen.
