Add to basketKøbenhavn (Copenhagen), C. A. Reitzel, [1864-1872]. In four volumes. 8vo (22.0 x 14.5 cm). 453 pp.; one tissue-guarded lithographed plate. Uniform polished half calf over pebbled boards. Spine with gilt ornamental bands and title. Yellow endpapers, subtly marbled edges. = The interleaved copy of the Danish military officer and entomologist August Frederik "Gustav" Baron Wedell-Wedellsborg (1844-1923), with his stamp on the front free endpapers recto. Wedell added handwritten titles and indexes. In addition, a part - on Danmarks cerambyces (24 pp.) - is neatly handwritten by Wedell. The Danish entomologist Jørgen Matthias Christian Schiødte (1815-1884) published these coleopterological observations in the Naturhistorisk Tidsskrift, of which he was the editor, between 1864 and 1872 with titles mostly starting with "Tilleag til Danmarks.", or with "Fortegnelse over de i Danmark levende.", followed by the name of a beetle genus or family. The four volumes present here have these papers grouped in chronological order. The index, therefore, is most helpful. A handwritten letter from a Mr Rosenkrantz from Aarhus, to Wedell, dated 7 April 1886, is added, dealing with Danish ground beetles (this probably being another Danish baron, Hans Frederik Rosenkrantz [1822-1905] who is listed in Ross, as "Hans Frederick Rosenkrantz"). Another inclusion is a proof copy of Emil Adolf Løvendal's Fortegnelse over de i Danmark levende Phalacroidae, Nitidulariae, Trogositidae, Colydiidae og Cucujidae (published 1884) with many corrections in Wedell's hand. Løvendahl (1839-1901) was another Danish entomologist, chiefly interested in beetles. He published but a few papers before his untimely death. Joints and spine ends rubbed, otherwise a very good set. A unique ensemble. Carpenter, M. M. (1945) Bibliography of Biographies of Entomologists, p. 110.; Horn-Schenkling II(2), p. 656 (for Løvendal); II(4), pp. 47-48 (for Schiødte); Ross, R. (2001) A Dictionary of Entomology, p. 791 (for Rosenkrantz).
