VORWORT. Die vorliegende Gesamtausgabe von Shakespeares Werken soll diejenigen Dramen ? der Zahl nach sechsunddreißig Sowie die Gedichte enthalten, die heute im Lichte der in- und ausländischen Fachwissenschaft als das literarische Vermächtnis des großen Briten zu gelten haben. Bei keinem andern Dichter der Neuzeit haben die Authentizitätsfragen der Forschung so zu schaffen gemacht, wie eben bei ihm. Nur zwei von den Gedichten hat er selbst in Druck gegeben und mit eigenen Widmungen versehen; von den zahlreichen Dramen ist nur ein Teil ? sechzehn ? zu seinen Lebzeiten ohne seinen Willen, jedenfalls ohne seine Billigung und vielfach in verderbter Gestalt, von andern herausgegeben worden. Erst sieben Jahre nach seinem Tode wurden diese nebst den übrigen durch seine Freunde und Kunstgenossen Heminge und Condell in der ?ersten Folioausgabe" von 1623 gesammelt, einer Ausgabe, die zwar auf Bühnenmanuskripte von Shakespeares eigener Gesellschaft zurückgeht, aber an Sorgfalt des Druckes gar manches zu wünschen übrig läßt. Stellenweise gebricht es sogar an jedem Sinn. Nichtsdestoweniger ist es der mühseligen Kritik vergangener Jahrhunderte allmählich gelungen, verständliche und im allgemeinen zuverlässige Texte der einzelnen Dramen herzustellen, auch mit rühmlichem= Scharfblick Echtes von Unechtem gebührend zu unterscheiden. Wie jeder große Dichter hat auch Shakespeare in größerem Maßstab älteres Quellenmaterial verwendet. Er hat sich auch nicht gescheut, wie es damals in weit höherem Grade wie heute als statthaft galt, bereits vorhandene dramatische Werke neu zu beleben und zu vertiefen, wobei nicht zu vergessen ist, daß der dramatische Dichter der englischen Renaissance einzig und allein für die Bühne schuf. An ein Lesepublikum zu denken, lag ihm damals noch völlig fern. Der modernen Shakespeareausgabe gebührt es, nicht nur alles, was der Dichter selbst zutage gefördert, sondern auch alles, an dessen endgültiger Gestalt er einen wesentlichen Anteil hat, aufzunehmen. Werke wie Perikles, die kaum, und andere, die entschieden nicht von ihm herrühren können, scheiden daher füglich aus ? so auch in der gegenwärtigen Ausgabe.
