First edition of this important account of Schmidt's excavations in Schwitzerland, mainly finds in the former Roman settlements, the towns of Aventicum (colonized under Vespasian) and Culm. - "Un des meilleurs ouvrages qu'on eut publi?s jusqu'alors sur les antiquitees de la Suisse." (Brunet V:210). The works was reprinted in 1771 under a slightly different title. Fr?d?ric-Samuel Schmidt de Rossan, born in Bern in 1737 and died in Frankfurt am Main in 1796, was a Swiss scholar. Admitted to the evangelical ministry in 1761, Schmidt promptly abandoned theology to devote himself to the study of antiquities. Appointed, in 1762, honorary professor of antiquities at Basle, he was, in 1765, summoned to Karlsruhe with the title of director of the margrave's library. He ended up settling in Frankfurt-am-Main where he carried out various diplomatic missions. Head and tail/edgewear, chipping to spine (minimal loss), scattered minor foxing internally, otherwise tight, bright, and unmarred. Full contemporary speckled calf, with 35 plates, Quarto, 4to, 118, [8], pp with errata at rear, foldout plates. With clippings and annotations pasted in on front boards, endpapers, dated 1899-1900. Owner/institutional bookplate at front pastedown.

Schmidt was born in 1737 in Bern. After studying theology, he devoted himself to archeology and Egyptology. In its founding year 1759 he became a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. In 1760 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. In 1762 he was appointed professor honorarius of antiquities in Basel. From 1764 he worked in Karlsruhe as Director of the Public Library and the Margrave's Coin and Natural History Cabinet. 1769 Schmidt came as a diplomat of the Margrave of Baden-Durlach to Frankfurt am Main, where he served as Markgräflicher Baden secret Legationrath and Resident. In 1783 he was appointed to the Hesse-Cassel secret council and Upper Rhine district envoy and resident and Pfalz-Sulzbachian secret counselor and resident of Frankfurt am Mayn. On September 18, 1790, the Palatinate Bavarian Imperial Vicariate elevated him to the status of Imperial Baron.

Er war mehrfacher Preisträger der Académie des Incriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris.Er wurde Professor in Basel, später in Karlsruhe, trat in den diplomatischen Dienst des Marktgrafenvon Baden Durlachund wurde 1790 in den Adelsstand erhoben. - Die vorliegende Publikation war die erste Veröffentlichung zu den römischen Funden der grössten römischen Siedlung der Schweiz sowie zu den Funden aus Oberkulm, Kt. Aargau. Die erste Tafel zu den Funden von Kulm dürfte die erste bildliche Darstellung einer archäologischen Grabung in der Schweiz sein. Der ursprüngliche Vermerk "tome premier" wurde im vorliegenden Exemplar ausgeschnitten und alt mit weissem Papier unterlegt. Titelblatt mit kleinem Stempel.
