From the introduction: "The British Union-Catalogue of Early Music is a record of the printed music published before the end of the year 1800 now preserved in over one hundred libraries throughout the British Isles. It is important to note that the Catalogue includes a great quantity of pieces issued in many European countries from the earliest days of music printing and is not confined to editions of British music or to British editions of works by European composers.By far the largest proportion of material contributed by any single library comes from the British Museum, amounting probably to 60 per cent, of the whole. .Despite the preponderance of British Museum holdings, however, a remarkable wealth of new or little-known material has been found in other libraries. The libraries covered by the Union-Catalogue are of several distinct kinds. At their head are those of national status, the British Museum, the Bodleian Library, Cambridge University Library, and the National Libraries of Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Many rich collections are to be found in the colleges and museums of the older universities and in cathedral libraries. Most of the teaching colleges of music throughout the country have received early publications into their working libraries at some stage in their development. There are also a number of public libraries, administered by local authorities, which have large special collections of music, such as the Henry Watson Library in Manchester; others have smaller collections embedded in their general stock. A glance at the location list preceding the Catalogue should suffice to show the variety of the institutions visited by the Editor. The only criterion for the inclusion of their holdings has been that they should be permanent and not liable to dispersal." The British Union-Catalogue of Early Music contains entries for: (i) Musical works. (ii) Music printed in or issued as a supplement to books and periodicals. (iii) Settings of liturgies when these bear the name of a composer or editor. (iv) Psalters and hymnals which contain musical settings. The Union-Catalogue is primarily a composer catalogue and is arranged alphabetically. Spines faded, covers slightly rubbed, a scuff and scratch to the front board of volume 2.
