Add to basketFirst edition, first printing, of the Nazi party's own study, illustrated throughout, of political propaganda posters, produced for internal use as a handbook for Nazi propagandists. The author was a leading figure in the party's propaganda wing and had no doubt, as he states in his forward, that "we have the political poster to thank for the fact that a liberalist and a Marxist worldview were forced to the ground and that National Socialism conquered the Reich" (translated). The book presents an array of posters, including British, French, American, and German First World War designs, through to a wide range of German political posters from all sides in the 1920s and early 1930s, including many explicitly anti-Nazi. It then covers posters since the Nazis came to power, all of which, naturally, were then tightly controlled by the party. Despite its intended use as a Nazi handbook on the best way to indoctrinate and move the people, the work has long been recognized as historically valuable. It is one of the earliest works to study and illustrate political propaganda across different countries, and it collects numerous posters which survive in few examples. Schockel gives commentary on the effect of each poster, which is particularly revealing in demonstrating the party's thinking in crafting their own posters, and the level of consideration which went into maximizing impact. Despite his rigid ideology, his analysis of the psychological effects of different designs is generally convincing. The book was produced for internal use by the Nazi party rather than for the general public, and remained the party's property. Each copy was printed with such a notice on the verso of the title page, which could be filled out by hand, dated, and stamped. This copy belonged to the propaganda office in Gau Essen (Gaupropagandaleitung Essen), dated 21 December 1938. It has the stamp of the Nazi national propaganda administration, the Reichspropagandaleitung, and the rubber-stamped signature of their leader Hugo Fischer. The work was intended as the first of a series of treatises on propaganda from the party's central propaganda office, and is numbered 1 on the spine, but the outbreak of the war also made it the last. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in silver. Housed in custom red slipcase. Very light rubbing, contents clean: a near-fine copy.
