Die 24 Präludien und Fugen sind das Ergebnis eines vorgezeichneten Plans: nicht wie bei Bachs Wohltemperiertem Klavier in der Folge von Halbtonschritten, sondern in Quintenzirkelfolge wie bei Chopins 2…4 Préludes. Der Zyklus gab dem Komponisten unschätzbare Möglichkeiten, seine Kreativität ungeachtet sozialer oder politischer Strömungen unter Beweis zu stellen. Schostakowitsch ging selbst so weit, den Zyklus beim Komponistenverband einzureichen und ihn im Mai 1951 einem Gremium vorzuspielen. Dennoch wurde das Werk nicht gerade mit Wohlwollen aufgenommen. Immerhin durfte er während der folgenden 18 Monate Teile daraus öffentlich aufführen, wenn auch meist nur für ein »geladenes« Publikum aus Parteifunktionären und Mitgliedern der Streitkräfte. Im Sommer 1952 setzte sich Tatjana Nikolajewa mit Erfolg für eine öffentliche »Absegnung« und Veröffentlichung ein. Am 23. und 28. Dezember gab sie die Uraufführung des vollständigen Zyklus. Trotz ihrer Überzeugung, dass das Werk nur in seiner Gesamtheit beurteilt werden könne, wurden während der folgenden drei Jahrzehnte Teilaufführungen zur Norm. Swjatoslaw Richters Aufnahme ausgewählter Stücke von 1963 wurde davon am berühmtesten. Der Komponist selbst nahm nur 16 Stücke des Zyklus auf. Seit Mitte der achtziger Jahre jedoch spielen viele Pianisten wieder den vollständigen Zyklus. Englisch.
