Ab 1830 lehrte er in Olmütz Theoretische Medizin für Wundärzte; 1835 folgte er einem Ruf an die Universität Wien, wo er über Jahrzehnte Theoretische Medizin, später Allgemeine Pathologie und Pharmakologie lehrte. 1849 übernahm er die neu geschaffene Professur für Allgemeine Pathologie und Pharmakologie und richtete ein modernes pharmakologisches Institut ein; seine Lehrbücher zur Pharmakognosie und Pharmakologie sowie seine Mitarbeit an der 5.
