HARDCOVER. 1840, First edition. A very good copy bound in burgundy boards with gilt lettering on the sun faded spine. The photos of the authors are pasted to the front endpapers. There are previous owners signatures on the front pastedown and title page but otherwise the contents are fine and undamaged. This copy is now housed in a custom made slipcase. "In presenting the following pages to the public, the writers deem it their duty to state the objects and motives for doing so. The chief motives are - to keep up the good understanding, and to facilitate the intercourse, between the Aborigines and Europeans; to give to the latter a medium of communication, and, especially, assistance to those who may be inclined to acquire the language; to enliven the hopes of those who wish the christianization and civilization of their colored fellow-men, showing them that a race of human beings possessing a language so regular in its formation and construction as that of the South Australian natives, cannot be incapable of either; and to refute premature and unjust detractions concerning the mental capabilities of the Aborigines of Australia." Contemporary signature dated 1841 to front endpaper with a note in German. Wrappers slightly marked and worn, a very nice copy of the first edition in the publisher's blue wrappers. Fixed to the front pastedown is the bookplate of Harold J. Sheard (1890 - 1975) noted author, anthropologist and colleague of Charles Mountford.

The authors were Lutheran missionaries and pastors. They arrived in Adelaide on 12 October 1838 and immediately set about establishing a school. This was their first publication. The extensive vocabulary includes a section on "the names of places and rivers." Ferguson, 3102.
