Giotto designed model worlds from plausibly simulated places that invite viewers to to put yourself in… the situations or processes described. The artists of the following generations continued to develop different aspects of this concept, and on both sides of the Alps, on the walls of churches and secular buildings, on boards and in books, there was the flood of visual media that has been characteristic of western culture since the Middle Ages. New forms of representation such as the perspective were developed, as well as new forms of using images such as the portrait and the allegory. In this respect, Giotto not only contributed to the renewal of artistic means, but also to an expanded role of visual media in social discourse.
