Blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt vignette of three soldiers to front cover. xxvii, 320pp. With photo portrait of the author as frontispiece, tissue-guarded, and 14 other b&w photos and line illustrations in plates, and 3 maps. (Note: three of the four maps listed are…present, one is missing. One folding map of the Nupe Country is present but loose). Foreword by Sir George Goldie. Vandeleur lead a military expedition in 1897 that surveyed the Nupe country around the Niger river, and his route is shown on one of the maps. Also some military actions are described. This copy is ex-library, (Alassio English library) and has just a small stamp to title page, some ink class marks to front pastedown and to spine. A scarce book on lesser known episodes of the British empire in Africa, in Fair to Good condition overall. Covers have some light marks and spots, some cloth fading and tears to spine edges, though gilt is bright. Binding sound though with lean to covers and crack to front internal hinge. Some foxing, mostly to margins. Pictures available.
