A nicely filled, peculiarly anachronistic, Victorian scrapbook comprised of printed articles and engrave…d illustrations predominantly excised from late eighteenth century printed books and periodicals. The majority of the illustrations are portraits of noteworthy French and English statesmen and members of the aristocracy, including; Louis XIV, Frederick III, and the Grand Duchess of Russia. A notable exception is a depiction of 'The Guillotine or Machine on which the King suffered at Paris'. Size: Quarto.

Joints lightly scuffed, else fine. Showcases manuscript poetry and a wonderful array of artwork by numerous contributors, as a few signed or initialed pieces attest (names mentioned include Phillis S. Samuel and Caroline Samuel). With 11 engravings (8 of them hand-colored), and 7 original pencil drawings, 12 original paintings (watercolors and gouaches), 4 original silhouettes. Very nicely accomplished images of birds and animals, landscapes, portraits of women (some in oriental dress), and scenes (like a group of men drinking and smoking at a table). A pleasing collection, including an original trompe l'oeil piece, that appears to be a collaged collection of cards.
