The text for most of the eighty-six illustrations covers the history and dimensions of a boat, and often includes sketches of the captains as well. Short biographies are included of Antonio Jacobsen, Fred Pansing and the Bard Brothers, who devoted their talents to maritime painting during this period, as well as of the Short Brothers of New Brunswick, who built many of the boats which plied New England waters. A history of the various sail boats and steamships that operated from or along the Maine coast, arranged by name of ship (with illustration wherever possible) and a description of the dimensions of the boat, its history and biographies of their captains. With a short section on the seafaring heritage of Maine. FAIR jacket on a GOOD book. Heavy uneven browning to the jacket, with some staining, minor to moderate soiling and scuffing. Heavy tearing along the extremities and hinges, with several large tears. Chipping present, with a 1 1/2 inch piece missing from the head of the spine. Minor associated creasing. Old tape repair on the reverse of the jacket. Book faded, with uneven browning, including a heavy area at the head of the spine. Light soiling and edgewear. Paper a bit toned, with some foxing to the endpapers.

According to the author, "To the next generation the events of my time are as remote as that April day in 1898 when my father ran from grammar school shouting, 'Remember the Maine, To hell with Spain!'" The author's narrative is pieced together from love letters, cancelled checks, military orders and office diaries to be read as folklore, not as history. Signed by Author.
