An den Rektor der Universität Jena, d. i. der Theologe Karl August von Hase (18001890), mit dem Ausdruck seines Bedauerns, daß ich durch ein unerwartetes Hinderniß, noch ehe ich auf mein Urlaubsgesuch Bescheid habe, abgehalten werde, Sie am 18ten nach Leipzig zu begleiten. Ich bitte deshalb bei Ihrem verehrten Herrn Schwager mich freundlich entschuldigen zu wollen [.]". Moritz Seebeck war 1835 als Gymnasialdirektor nach Meiningen berufen worden, um das höhere Schulwesen im Herzogtum Sachsen-Meiningen zu reformieren; zudem war Seebeck von 1835 bis 1844 der Erzieher und Lehrer des Sachsen-meiningischen Erbprinzen Georg, des späteren Herzogs Georg II., den er auch zu dessen Studium nach Bonn begleitete. 1848 wurde Seebeck Bevollmächtigter von Sachsen-Meiningen bei der provisorischen Zentralgewalt in Frankfurt am Main, wo er politische Erfahrungen sammeln konnte. 1849 trat Moritz Seebeck dann als Bevollmächtigter der thüringischen Staaten beim Verwaltungsrat in Berlin und Geheimer Staatsrat in den Staatsdienst von Weimar ein. Nach seiner politischen Tätigkeit war er von 18511877 Kurator an der Sachsen-ernestinischen Gesamtuniversität Jena. Er setzte sich für eine starke und stetige wissenschaftliche Entwicklung der Universität ein. Für seine Verdienste um die Stadt Jena und für die Förderung und finanzielle Absicherung der Universität verlieh ihm die Stadt Jena 1858 die Ehrenbürgerschaft" (Wikipedia, Abfrage v. 30. X. 2009).
