An uncommon NAACP publication, published right after the Brown vs. Board of Education decision, with a range of articles on racism and segregation in Virginia and the efforts to desegregate schools there. The pamphlet is made up of several essays, entitled "Behind the Segregation Curtain," "The N.A.A.C.P. - Defender of Constitutional Freedom," "The Truch about what led to School Cases," "Lookng at Work of the NAACP in the Fight for Integrated Schools in Virginia," "Integration - An Avenue to Liberty for Both Groups," "The Way to Genuine Good Race Relations in Virginia," and "Our Way of Life in Virginia." The essays are all written anonymously. The pamphlet argues for the use of reason in reversing racial prejudice and suggests appealing to the intelligence of people as a means for combating the problem. Uncommon, with four copies held institutionally. 8vo, wraps, 30 pp. Some light wear, staple holes to edge, original owner's address and postage mark on back cover, overall very good plus.

First Edition. Taeuber, Karl E., and Alma F. Negroes in Cities (1965) is a major work of Civil Rights Era social science that analyzes residential segregation in American cities through demographic and statistical evidence. Published in the same year as the Voting Rights Act, the book supports research into African American urban history, housing discrimination, postwar metropolitan development, and the persistence of racial inequality outside the formal structures of Southern Jim Crow. Its importance lies in its sustained demonstration that discriminatory housing patterns remained deeply embedded in northern and midwestern cities through real estate practice, local governance, and neighborhood transition, making it a foundational study in the history of race and urban policy. Taeuber, Karl E., and Alma F. Taeuber. Negroes in Cities: Residential Segregation and Neighborhood Change. Chicago: Aldine Publishing Company, 1965. First edition. The text draws on census data and quantitative analysis to examine racial segregation and neighborhood change across American urban centers, tracing how Black residents were concentrated within restricted residential zones even as legal segregation was increasingly challenged elsewhere. The authors analyze mechanisms including discriminatory real estate practices, exclusionary zoning, and white flight, presenting segregation as a measurable and durable feature of postwar urban life. As a sociological study grounded in data rather than polemic, the book documents the institutional conditions shaping Black residence, mobility, and access to urban space during the height of the civil rights movement. Original mustard cloth boards stamped in white and black on front cover and spine. No dust jacket, as issued. 367 pages.Octavo. Light rubbing to boards with scattered small dark specks, minor soil to rear cover, and gentle toning to spine lettering; interior clean and unmarked; binding tight and square; overall very good. Issued at a moment when federal civil rights legislation had not yet resolved the entrenched realities of housing inequality, the book remains an important record of how segregation endured through urban systems that were statistical, spatial, and administrative as much as legal, giving it lasting value for collections on race, cities, and public policy in the modern United States.

Approximately 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Condition: Fine. A handbill calling for the boycott of Stag Beer. The handbill alleges that although "80 Per Cent of us Drink Stag Beer", the company employs no African-American salesmen and that if the A.S. Barboro Distribution company were not discriminating in its hiring, "We should have about Ten Negro Salesmen" on the company's Memphis beer trucks. The N.A.P.A., presumably the organization responsible for the flier, is unknown but assumed to be a local Memphis civil rights group. At the time of writing, we find only five other extant copies of this handbill: at Princeton University, University of Michigan Ann Arbor (William Clements and Hatcher Graduate Libraries), University of Iowa, and University of Memphis.

Original printed wrappers with wrapper title, as issued, and original staples. ii, 13, [1] pp. Near Fine. The Supreme Court heard argument in December 1952, but held the cases over for reargument in the following term. This is the Amicus Curiae brief submitted by the American Veterans Committee for the first argument. Supporting the District of Columbia children seeking to integrate the Washington public schools, the Committee contends that the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee the right to be free from racial discrimination, that equality of education is impossible under a regime of racially segregated schools, that equality can be achieved only by abolition of compulsory segregation by race, and that "The people of Washington are ready for and will accept integration of their public schools." The brief is signed in type by the Committee's National Counsel, Phineas Indritz, who was a distinguished civil rights and constitutional lawyer.

The Phelps Vocational High School was founded in 1912 as a trade school for African American boys, located in the historically Black neighborhood of Carver Langston. In the tradition of African American industrial education, the school initially specialized in printing, bricklaying, and carpentry. During World War II the school trained students in airplane and auto mechanics and building construction, funded by the Works Progress Administration. It began accepting girls in 1942 or 1943. Phelps is still open, now as the Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School. Offered here is a collection of forty-five photographs from Phelps, dating from around 1945 to 1955. The collection captures school life, pageants, sports, and the school's ROTC program. Many of the photos show students in plays, dancing, and participating in gymnastic cheerleading. D.C. schools would begin to integrate in 1954, the year that both Brown and the D.C.-specific Bolling v Sharpe were decided by the US Supreme Court. Some slight damage to edges and slightly curled; excellent. Forty-five 8 x 10 inch photographs.

Rowan County Board of Education, teacher pay vouchers, 1888 and 1892, documenting African American education within the segregated public school system of post-Reconstruction North Carolina. The vouchers record segregated public education and its funding mechanisms through payments to Black teachers approved at the county level. These documents show how African American educators were paid through formally structured systems requiring countersignature by the county superintendent and approval by district committee members. Two manuscript teacher salary vouchers, each approximately 8.5 x 7 inches and written on both sides. The first, dated March 26, 1888, authorizes payment of $30.00 to Maggie Locke for teaching in "School District No. 4, Rowan County, for Colored Race," covering the period from January 3 to March 2, 1888, in Atwell Township. The printed form specifies that payment is contingent upon countersignature by the county superintendent and approval by at least two district committee members, establishing formal oversight procedures. The verso bears Locke's signed receipt dated March 27, 1888, acknowledging payment from county treasurer J. M. McCubbins. The second voucher, dated January 16, 1892, records payment of $25.00 to Isaac Kerns for teaching in "School District No. 2, Salisbury & No. 2 Prov., Rowan County, for Col[ored] Race," with similar requirements for administrative approval prior to disbursement. The verso includes Kerns's signed acknowledgment of payment. Both documents explicitly designate the schools as serving the "Colored Race," indicating the formalized racial segregation embedded within the educational system. These vouchers document the operation of segregated schooling in the decades following the Civil War, when African American education expanded under conditions of systemic underfunding and institutional control. The requirement for multiple authorizations before payment records the bureaucratic regulation of Black teachers' labor, while the recorded wages provide quantitative evidence for comparative study of compensation disparities. Produced during a period when access to education for African Americans remained contested, these documents contribute to research on Reconstruction-era legacies, Jim Crow governance, and the role of Black educators in sustaining community institutions. Light wear, minor creasing, and typical manuscript handling marks; overall very good condition. Documentary record of the administrative structure and lived realities of segregated education in the late nineteenth-century South. Signed.

African American working men and women appear throughout this photograph archive documenting occupational identity and labor roles during the first half of the twentieth century. The images record Black workers in uniforms associated with municipal service, transportation, agriculture, and service industries during the era of racial segregation in the United States. During this period African Americans were frequently restricted to limited occupational sectors under Jim Crow policies, yet many played essential roles in maintaining urban infrastructure, transportation networks, and service industries. The photographs therefore document the visible presence of African American workers whose labor sustained local economies while they navigated racially stratified employment systems. Archive of 10 Silver gelatin photographs including three real photo postcards dating from approximately the early 1900s through the 1940s. Measurements range from approximately 5 × 7 inches to about 1.5 × 2 inches. The images depict individuals and small groups posed in occupational clothing associated with a variety of professions. One large photograph shows sixteen African American men and one child standing outside a firehouse, several wearing firefighter helmets while fire engines are visible inside a brick station behind them. Another image depicts an elderly man transporting milk on a horse drawn delivery wagon. Additional portraits show men dressed in uniforms or work attire including a double breasted white service uniform with sleeve insignia possibly associated with naval steward service or hospitality work, a headshot of a man wearing a military style cap and tunic suggesting transportation or security employment, and a formal portrait of a man wearing riding boots and gloves characteristic of a horse jockey uniform. One studio portrait features an elderly African American woman seated with baskets of fruit beside her, likely indicating agricultural or sharecropping work. A separate photograph shows a laborer standing near a storefront where a sign reading "Keokuk" appears in the background, suggesting a Midwestern location associated with rail or freight employment. The photographs illustrate occupations historically associated with African American labor during the early twentieth century, including transportation workers, service employees, agricultural laborers, municipal workers, and jockeys who were prominent in American horse racing before being largely excluded from the profession by the early twentieth century. Such portraits were often produced by local photography studios and preserved within family collections as visual records of employment, social respectability, and community standing. Light edge wear visible across several prints with minor creasing and small stains to the smallest portrait and one image showing a torn corner. Overall condition very good.

African American school and youth education photographs dating from the early twentieth century through the 1940s document the institutional development of Black education during the era of segregation in the United States. The images record students and teachers in grade schools, college classrooms, and organized youth programs, illustrating the growth of African American educational networks after emancipation and during the Jim Crow period. Schools for Black students expanded rapidly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through church sponsorship, philanthropic support, and the establishment of historically Black colleges and secondary schools. These photographs preserve visual evidence of that educational infrastructure, showing black children, adolescents, and college students engaged in academic and community life. Archive contains 10 photographs consisting of six real photo postcards and four larger silver gelatin prints dating approximately from the 1910s through 1940. Four postcards depict grade school classes including Jacksonville Colored School circa 1910s, Douglass School of Moselle Missouri photographed in 1915, a class labeled "7B Grade School #63" dated June 1929, and another group of Black children assembled outside a wooden schoolhouse. Two additional postcards document older students: one shows high school girls seated on the steps of a brick school building, and another depicts a 1922 classroom gathering at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. The Wiley College postcard carries a printed message on the verso describing the institution as "a college 'of the Negroes, for the Negroes, by the Negroes'," followed by commentary emphasizing the educational development of African Americans in the decades after slavery and inviting viewers to consider the college as evidence of that progress. Four silver gelatin prints expand the archive's documentation of African American educational and youth environments. A panoramic photograph records YMCA Camp Osceola in August 1940, a summer camp for predominantly Black boys where counselors wear jerseys from institutions including Seton Hall, Princeton High School, Somerville High School, and West Chester. Another photograph shows a summer school chemistry class credited in blindstamp to "The Photographic Division, C. M. Battey, Instructor, Tuskegee Institute, Alabama," accompanied by a caption explaining that teachers seeking certification in Domestic Science were required to take chemistry. Battey was an early twentieth century African American photographer associated with Tuskegee Institute and known for portrait work of figures such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Frederick Douglass. Two additional photographs depict a dining hall serving young African American women, likely associated with an Atlanta educational institution during the 1940s. Photographs range from approximately 5.5 × 3.5 inches to a panoramic print measuring about 14 × 5.5 inches, with several mounted on cardstock. Minor toning, light creasing, and some mount wear or small areas of mount loss appear on several prints while the photographic images remain clear. Very good condition overall and a substantial visual record of African American educational life during the segregation era.
