First edition of this early collection of verse by the Nobel Prize-winning Czech poet. With inventive and innovative typography and cover design by Karel Teige, founder and most prominent member of Devetsil, the dominant organization of artists and writers of the Czech avant-garde. Devitsil sought to balance the Purism of Ozenfant with he Constructivism of El Lissitzky and to mate this new form with modernist poetry. The volume at hand represents an unusual example of Dadaist tendencies in Teige's design.

Prague: Ve?ernice, 1922. Large octavo (24 × 16 cm). Original decorative wrappers on dark green paper stock; 202, [6] pp. Numerous leaves of plates and reproductions in the text. A very good, entirely unrestored copy; light fading to left edge and tiny chip to lower right corner. A particularly handsome copy of this legendary first Dev?tsil publication (relatively cheaply printed and often encountered in poor condition), with typography by Karel Teige (the design using the black circle is repeated on the rear wrapper, with additional text, and on the ffep and title). The almanac was the result, in part, of Seifert and Teige's soujourn to Paris in 1922, where they met numerous key figures of the avant-garde world, such as Le Corbusier and Man Ray. The anthology reflects this new orientation away from both Soviet Proletkult aesthetics and the Czech expressionist scene, and towards a more exciting international avant-garde aesthetics encompassing a wide range of media and disciplines. With contributions by the Czech writers and poets Vít?zslav Nezval, Jaroslav Seifert, Karel Teige, Karel Schulz, foreign authors such as Jean Cocteau, Yvan Goll, and Il'ia Erenburg, and shorter notices about cinema, circus, and other forms of mass entertainment. Also features numerous reproductions of works by international avant-garde artists, such as Alexander Archipenko, Marc Chagall, Tsuguharu Foujita, George Grosz, Fernand Léger, Jacques Lipchitz, Kisling, Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Rousseau, Seurat, D. P. Sterenberg, Maurice Utrillo, and Ossip Zadkine. Also contains a short summary of the Devetsil group and its activities in German, French, and Russian, as well as the advertisement for their second publication, the anthology 'Zivot' (Life). Primus 12. Vloemans 13 (the variant in orange wrappers).
P?erov and Prague: Hranice-Václav Petr, 1922-1929. Octavos and quartos (21 × 17 to 28.5 × 19.5 cm). Original printed wrappers; 24 pp. each, beginning with vol. III consecutive pagination: 228, 312, 271 and 226 pp. Many issues with illustrations in the text and on separate plates. Very good, save for three issues with wear to wrappers; vol. II, no. 1 lacks a fragment of the front wrapper. Complete run of this important Czech journal of the interwar literary and artistic avant-garde, in the original wrappers, with frequent illustrations and bold typographic design. Issued by Literární skupina, an association of Czech writers that closely identified with Expressionism. Like the avant-garde group Dev?tsil - based around such figures as Karel Teige, Jaroslav Seifert, and Adolf Hoffmeister - the movement sought to unite the young creative minds of the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic. The two groups collaborated, but often disagreed, and their exchanges can be traced throughout this key publication of Czech modernist culture. In design and content, the journal became particularly interesting beginning with vol. IV, which was edited by Seifert and Teige themselves, who shifted the outlook to the international avant-garde. The contributions include important theoretical articles on topics such as Constructivism, Dada, Soviet Art, Surrealism, film aesthetics; poetry and prose by Biebl, Hoffmeister, Nezval, Seifert, Wolker and others; and translations of Apollinaire, Borges, Cendrars, Cocteau, Goll, Khlebnikov and others. The illustrations show works by Altman, Archipenko, Gropius, Kubi?ta, Larionov, Lissitzky, Malevich, Rodchenko, Teige, Zadkin and many others, as well as numerous advertisements for key Czech avant-garde publications. Rare complete, especially in all original wrappers.
