Original string bound half burgundy cloth over marbled paper covered boards with illustrated title pasted on front covers, and printed title laid on spines. Max Seliger's personal bookplate pasted on each front free endpaper. The two portfolios contain 10 original drawings, 12 patriotic postcards, 11 propaganda vignettes, 2 engraved ex-libris, and three prints by Max Seliger, on 18 panels. Drawings, designs and prints on the theme of the First World War, all executed between 1915 and 1916. The drawings are all handsigned and titled. The first portfolio contains seven mounted original drawings in pencil, including one partly colored. The striking pencil studies depict the everyday life of the German soldier at the front. The first two drawings depict a German soldier about to use his mess kit, and cooking; the third drawing show a feldwebel (a non-commissioned officer) seated; the fourth and fifth depict a soldier cutting a stone, and plastering; the last two drawings evoke a sense of glory, thrill and patriotic exultation with a soldier embracing the German flag (partly colored). The last drawing show a victorious soldier raising his helmet in the air while shouting "Hurra!" The second portfolio contains three mounted original sketches in ink on tracing paper for the design of patriotic postcards. The following three panels contain the complete set of twelve mounted patriotic postcards designed by Seliger, including the three executed after the original sketches. The next panel contains 11 mounted propaganda vignettes showing a German soldier embracing the German flag. The following panel features two mounted engraved Ex-Libris vignettes, titled "Abschied" (showing a soldier leaving his family for the front), and "Heimkehr" (the same soldier, crowned with the laurels of victory, returning to his wife and child). The last three panels feature three illustrated German song sheets, published by von Breitkopf & Härtel (Leipzig) in 1915, and illustrated by Max Seliger ("Gebet während der Schlacht"; "Lieb'Heimatland"; "O Deutschland hoch in Ehren"). Moderate rubbing along edges of portfolios. Captions in German. Portfolios in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition. About the artist: Max Seliger (1865-1920) was active as a painter, decorator and mosaicist, working in Berlin and Leipzig for most of his life. In 1893, he was commissioned to decorate the facade of the German pavilion at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Another significant public commission was for a series of mural paintings to decorate the former Royal Gymnasium (school) in Wurzen, Saxony. Having established a particular reputation as a designer of mosaic decorations, Seliger executed a series of mosaics painted for the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin (1903-1904). From 1901 to his death in 1920, he served as the director of the Koenigliche Akademie für graphische Kunst und Buchgewerbe (the Royal Academy of Graphic Arts and Printing) in Leipzig.

Facsimile auf der grossen 'Bugra' d. i. die Weltausstellung für Buchgewerbe finden [.]". - Serving as director of the Königliche Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig since 1901, Seliger initiated the famous 1914 "Ausstellung für Buchgewerbe und Grafik" ("Bugra"), He created monumental murals, glass paintings and mosaics for several public buildings, including the Reichstag and the Golgatha church in Berlin as well as the entrance hall of the "Deutsche Bücherei" in Leipzig. - Small tear and traces of a fold near lower right corner; some small ink spots near left margin. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Briefkopf) sowie über die Gründung eines Pommerschen Künstlervereins. - Seliger wurde 1901 Direktor der Königlichen Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig. Er nahm eine Neuausrichtung dieser Anstalt vor und stellte dabei die Werkstatt des Kunstschaffenden in den Vordergrund. 1914 begründete er die Leipziger Ausstellung für Buchgewerbe und Graphik. Er schuf vorwiegend monumentale Wandgemälde, Glasmalereien und Mosaiken für zahlreiche öffentliche Gebäude, unter anderem für das Reichstagsgebäude und für die Eingangshalle der Deutschen Bücherei Leipzig.
