An immediate eyewitness response to September 11: an album of 75 unpublished photographs capturing the attacks and their aftermath. The album and the additional material present a compelling example of an amateur effort to document and preserve the events, both in the moment, and in the months that followed. The album was compiled by Kathy Dee Zasloff (1945-2024), who worked in theatre and television from 1969 to 1982 before turning to activism and founding the nonprofit People Against Sexual Abuse. She lived in Brooklyn during the attacks and photographed the events as they unfolded. The colour photographs, many with printed captions, show the burning Twin Towers from the Brooklyn Promenade, the smoke and emptiness after their collapse, and crowds of grieving spectators. She then photographs the memorials at her local fire station, the Middagh Street Fire House (and notes that they lost eight firefighters). On 14 September, people were allowed back into lower Manhattan. She captures emergency responders still in action, destroyed cars, the wreckage, and the memorial at Montague Street. The album features several photomontages in which Zasloff layers and merges multiple images to craft panoramic views. In January 2002, Zasloff relocated to Asheville, where she assembled this album as a photo essay of her experiences. The album is accompanied by: i) A CD entitled "Year in Pictures" from 2001, which contains five folders comprising 129 JPEGs by Zasloff of the attacks and subsequent days. Most are duplicates of the images in the album but many are unique. This also includes seven folders of personal photographs from 2001. ii) A DVD created and produced by Zasloff (dated 23 August 2006), featuring a 2-minute montage of her photographs accompanied by audio of news reports of the events (including those by Dan Rather and others). iii) A floppy disk entitled "Attack on WTC 9/11/01" (contents unexamined). iv) A New York City Subway service map showing the updated service as of Wednesday, September 19, 2001. v) A photograph of an American flag draped over a memorial at sunset. Album (424 x 319 mm), green imitation leather, containing 75 colour photos (153 x 104 mm), together with other material (see note). In excellent condition.
