Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Volume 1, only of 2 . Written in two parts. Octavo. 211mm. Physical description. [5] vi-vii [1], [1] ii-iii [1], [i] x-xi [1], [1] 1 - 494. With a half title. Plates,[11] including 8 folding. Errors in pagination up to page [1]. All edges speckled brown. Endpapers spotted as are the engraved plates, otherwise a generally a very clean copy. Half calf over marbled paper backed boards, recently expertly rebacked to style with a smooth spine, new title label and volume number stamped direct. Overall, a very good copy of scarce book, very rarely seen for sale. The first article, of 40 in the First Part, is the Rev John Brinkley's important discoveries -' On the Method of finding the Longitude from the culmination of the Moon and Stars,' John Brinkly(c.1767-1864), bishop and astronomer; and first astronomer royal for Ireland, 1792; awarded the Copley Medal in 1824 -' for his mathematical and astronomical papers, published in the Philosophical Transactions.' It appears that this was a short lived journal with only one more volume being published in 1825/26. The Library Hub Discover (on-line 4/2024) locates six copies (or part copies) - British Library; University of Cambridge; Queens University, Balfast; Royal Observatory, Edinburgh; Trinity College, Dublin; University of Oxford Libraries.
