Add to basketFirst state, uncommon in this condition and with the original wallet, of this colourful 1930s tourist map decorated with drawings of major landmarks and silhouette vignettes of street life. WorldCat records just four copies. With this map on hand, visitors to the old imperial capital could experience its rich mix of stunning architecture, imperial finery, bustling street life and modern conveniences. All the major sights are noted, including the Forbidden City, Drum Tower, Lama Temple, and the Temple of Heaven. Also highlighted are Liulichang street (famous for its curio shops), the market at Longfusi, several theatres, and the 50-metre public swimming pool located to the west of the imperial residence. The layout of the Legation Quarter is shown in detail, with each legation decorated with the appropriate national flag. Visitors are also able to find the location of hotels, the post office, the police department, the Peiyang Press itself, and many other services. The many silhouette adornments display Peiping's full cast of street figures: pedlars, a traveller with camels, cyclists, scholars, a rickshaw puller, a funeral procession, musicians, and many more. Various dates have been proposed for this map state based on the design of the tri-band German flag in the Legation Quarter. Copies have been misdated to before 1933 due to the flag being incorrectly identified as the black-gold-red Reichsbanner, used up to the electoral victory of the Nazi party in 1933. On this copy, and others we have traced, the flag appears as the black-white-red design of the German Imperial Flag, used between 1933 and 1935. A later state is titled "Peking" and shows the Nazi swastika flag on the German and ex-Austrian legations. Single sheet (590 x 494 mm), lithographed in colour and finished by hand, folding away to 202 x 103 mm. Housed in original red card wallet lettered in black. Colours sharp and bright, traces of production process including several faint red smudges and a few spots of ink mostly falling outside neatline, light creasing at top-right. A near-fine copy in the well-preserved wallet with a little creasing and small loss to one corner.…

Add to basketColoured folding plan of Peking with original envelope. 60 x 50cm. A few neat repairs at folds, two panels evenly browned on reverse. A very good copy of a scarce pictorial plan with its envelope. This delightful and scarce pictorial map of Peking with landmarks and streets in romanised Chinese, with occasional Chinese characters, is surprisingly scarce. Although apparently issued in several editions in the 1920s and 30s, it appears relatively infrequently on the market. The divisions of the Legation District are indicated by their flags - this edition shows the German Legation by use of the black, white and red bands of the German flag. This flag which was no longer used after 1935 helps date this edition. Other landmarks and attractions shown included theatres, foreign shopping area adjacent to the legations quarter, Liu Li Chang Curio District, the racecourse, the many city gates etc. …

Contact seller5-star sellerNone. Condition: None. Large folding color pictorial map, 60 × 50 cm (23.6 × 19.7 in.), folding into the original red paper wallet. Recently backed for preservation. Red offset traces from prolonged contact with the original wrapper remain visible; wrapper worn and creased, with a small loss at the upper edge. A well-known pictorial map of Republican-era Beijing, then officially Peiping, by the American illustrator John Kirk Sewall, published by the Peiyang Press for the foreign visitor market. Sewall combined a practical street plan with a highly stylized and humorous vision of the city, emphasizing monuments, foreign legations, hotels, shops, transportation, and characteristic figures of urban life. The map is particularly evocative of interwar foreign Peiping, with the Legation Quarter and international presence prominently represented. The flags shown there help date this state to the early-to-mid 1930s. Later states appeared under the title Peking with altered political details. The present copy retains its original red paper wallet, whose color has transferred onto portions of the map along the old folds and contact areas.…
