Eugenia Codronchi Argeli, nota anche con lo pseudonimo di Sfinge (Imola, 15 aprile 1865 - Castel San Pietro Terme, 2 giugno 1934), è stata una scritt…rice italiana. Nacque in una famiglia nobile e agiata, era infatti la figlia primogenita del conte Giovanni, politico di idee liberali, già ministro della Pubblica Istruzione nonché vicepresidente del Senato. Crebbe quindi in un contesto privilegiato e stimolante, in cui poté facilmente avvicinarsi alla cultura letteraria della propria epoca. Prolifica, Sfinge scrisse saggi e recensioni che uscirono sulla stampa nazionale, dalla rivista Nuova Antologia al quotidiano Il Resto del Carlino, dal Giornale d'Italia a La Tribuna. Pubblicò anche molte novelle e romanzi, in cui le figure femminili sono indipendenti e moderne, ben lontane dagli stereotipi ottocenteschi. Il suo primo romanzo, Il colpevole, uscì nel 1900, già sotto pseudonimo. L'anno seguente pubblicò Femminismo storico, un saggio storico dedicato alle biografie di donne illustri. Un critico suo contemporaneo descrisse il suo stile come «facile e trasparente». Interventista, tra il 1914 e il 1918 trattò più volte argomenti bellici nelle sue novelle; il suo Leggende della grande guerra (che si racconteranno fra cinquant'anni), opera fiabesca che scrisse nel gennaio 1917, fu censurato e per questo non poté essere pubblicato, probabilmente perché si permetteva «di raccontare e, in alcuni passaggi, criticare aspramente la complessa condizione di neutralità della Grecia allo scoppio del conflitto». Amica di vari letterati, tra cui si ricordano Carducci, Pascoli e Panzacchi, Sfinge era solita frequentare vari circoli letterari ed è descritta come «una figura di primo piano della cultura letteraria della propria epoca, ben inserita in una fitta rete di relazioni.» Non si sposò e convisse con un'altra scrittrice, Bianca Belinzaghi, nota con lo pseudonimo di Guido da San Giuliano. A Roma, dove le due risiedevano dopo aver abitato in Romagna, frequentarono tra gli altri la futura Premio Nobel per la letteratura Grazia Deledda e, probabilmente, l'attivista Clelia Romano Pellicano. Eugenia Codronchi Argeli morì il 2 giugno 1934 a villa Sfinge, la sua villa di Castel San Pietro, in seguito distrutta. È sepolta al Cimitero del Piratello. Caduta nell'oblio, nonostante il ruolo centrale che ebbe nel panorama culturale a lei contemporaneo, Codronchi Argeli è assente da molte antologie novecentesche e del XXI secolo. La documentazione relativa alla scrittrice è conservata presso la Biblioteca comunale di Imola, nel fondo Archivi e Rari, nella sezione Carte Sfinge.
