Original reprint in staple-bound printed wraps 16 x 25cm. 12pp. Very good, tanned to first and last leaves, short closed tears to spine fold, and author's business card taped inside front wrap with the statement "Exchange reprints requested". Rare with 6 locations on Worldcat, none on Jisc (Mediatheque MQB, AUB, National Library of Israel, Harvard, Northwestern University, UCLA). William Mathias Shanklin (1896-1980) was Professor of Histology and Neural Anatomy at the American University of Beirut Medical School, and affiliated with the Central Institute for Brain Research in Amsterdam. He expresses the novelty of his work by quoting Seligman: "Probably there is no country in the world of equal area with Arabia, certainly there is none approaching it in historic interest, of whose inhabitants we are so profoundly ignorant". His findings are based on head measurements of 791 Arabs working for the Iraq Petroleum Company at Mafrak, facilitated by IPC manager Mr Cole and Dr Dragasti; and in the central and southern desert facilitated by Chief of Military Affairs Colonel Peake Pasha. Tamir Nassar reassured the subjects "who thought that calipers were a means of stealing the mind, or, still worse, of causing premature death". Referencing Kappers' work in Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, which found that many who called themselves Arab had "strong non-Arab admixtures", he asks "Who is the real Arab?". He also surveys data gathered by Livi, Chantre, and Bertram Thomas. He found the Howeitat, Beni Sakhr, and Hajayya were representative of the same race that occupied the Nile Valley and Tigris-Euphrates, also found in Upper Egypt, Sinai and the Hedjaz.

Add to basketFirst and sole offprint edition, scarce. "Our knowledge concerning the physical anthropology of the desert Arab, both of the Syrian and the Arabian deserts, is practically nil. The Akeydat and Maualy tribes were chosen because they are excellent examples of the Ahl Shemal people of the north" (pp. 217-8). Shanklin's study is very much in the vein of old-style physical anthropology, evincing the European urge to quantify and classify the "other". Nevertheless, it was an attempt to fill the lacunae in Western knowledge of the Bedouin and sits within the broader framework of "the Tribal Question", a heightened interwar interest in the world's desert zones and nomadic peoples. At the time of publication, Shanklin was professor in the Department of Histology in the American University of Beirut's school of medicine. The Wistar Institute was established in 1892, it's aim being to sponsor and publish new medical research. Just three copies traced at institutional libraries: American University of Beirut, National Library of Israel, and Northwestern. Octavo, pp. [36]. Tables in text. Original pale grey printed wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. Rear cover somewhat soiled, couple of indentations on front wrapper, internally bright with light creasing. A very good copy.
