Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Sharp, Gene (Sketch-maps) ;Norton, Boyd (Photos not otherwise attributed) (illustrator). 2nd Edition. Although the preface and introductions to each reading are in English, the body of the work is in the original French. As the authors state in the preface: " Whether the general tendencies of the Enlightenment are approved or disapproved, they are already of tremendous historical significance." Indeed, these works were seminal in development of the U.S.A. constitution, the French revolution, Karl Marx's philosophy and all subsequent efforts to develop multi-national government. The major revisions in this 2nd edition are after p 263 and with the inclusion of a Bibliograohy . Otis Edward Fellows (1909-1993) was a scholar of 18th-century French literature. He taught in the humanities for almost forty years at Columbia University. Fellows co-edited this widely used anthology of 18th-century French literature entitled The Age of Enlightenment with Norman L. Torrey, his colleague at Columbia. Hans Alexander Mueller (1888-1963) was one of several prominent masters of woodcut and wood-engraving born in Germany who emigrated to the United States in the 1930s. He settled in Scarsdale, New York, where he worked as a freelance book illustrator and artist. Hardcover has forest green leatherette boards with silver lettering, but no DJ. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. "Diary Part II". Small octavo; 45p in neat pencil + 7 hand drawn maps + 8p notes on maintenance of Lewis Gun inverted at rear. Over 5,000 words. The diary almost certainly written by one Private Norman H. Sharp of the London Regiment, this is his "Diary Part II", commencing 7 April 1917 when he is at the front line with his regiment, digging trenches, laying wire, and patrolling during the Arras offensive. (**Trenches were protected by thick barbed wire which had to be laid a sufficient distance from the trenches to avoid grenade attacks.) Easter Sunday 1917 : "Digging 7-12 midday. Attended Communion at 2pm. In trenches on patrol 9pm to 5am. Bulgars sent heavy stuff & many gas shells over on our left." April 9 : "Moved up to the front line to relieve B. Comp at 6pm". In a thunderstorm he is drenched to the skin and he suffers awful rheumatic pains in his legs as he tried to sleep and the storm turns to frost. And later?."Taking of Vimy Ridge caused great excitement today. Really it looks as if the end is in sight." April 12 : "Saw one of our aeroplanes his by shrapnel. Plane fell headlong for some hundreds of feet then marvellously recovered & managed to get back to our lines." April 13 : Working on the wiring party : "Rations getting very poor now. No bacon for several days & very rotten dinners - merely soup." April 14 : "Green valley heavily shelled by enemy all morning." April 15 : "Excitement over invitation to transfer to RFC. Most of the men are applying - especially in view of the idiotic system of working us to death which this Battalion has adopted." (** An infantry sergeant was paid 2s 6d a week, whilst an RFC Corporal received 5s 0d.) Artillery bombardment all day, then : "Air Raid on our camps by 12 Bosch planes about 6pm. Many bombs dropped near us, but no one hurt??Trying time, all crouching in bombardment trenches?.Terrific artillery fire all night long, shrapnel & high explosive resembling one of the old Somme barrages." Mention of Hill 565?."We blew it almost to bits all night & there was machine guns & rifle fire." April 25 : This afternoon a big air fight took place in front of our lines, between 15 of our planes & 5 Bosches. One of ours was brought down in flames in Bulgar lines??.more heavy fighting round Hill 535 from 2 to 5am??.Poured with rain from morning till night & all night after that. Wire sentry all night standing in 4" of water, cold & wet, wretched time." April 30 : At the end of a few days of unusual and unexpected rest, Sharp wonders : "this lazy time is not natural to our Division and we wonder if it means "Over The Top" soon."???"Our only worry is lack of food. Everything is short and I often feel the starved pinch of hunger. Bacon is awful, only a mouthful each, bread, 1/3 of a loaf for the day. Hardly any meat, and only soup for dinner with rice about twice a week. Milk & sugar & cheese are also very short. Altogether we suffer a good bit, especially as we have plenty of money but nowehere to spend it." May 1st : "Saw determined plane attack on our balloon. One plane had several shots at it but missed. Second was caught in act of attacking by a shell & fell smashed to earth. Other plane was driven down by ours, but managed to reach his own lines." May 12 : "Awful experience, lying in extended order in front of our wire whilst Bulgars sent over any number of shells - shrapnel &HE. Fortunately no one got hurt, but sorry to hear our platoon are doing it every night." And much else besides. He ends his narrative "See next Book - Part III" At the rear of the diary are seven pencil maps/drawings of the Arras Offensive in France. Accompanying this diary is a book of drawings entitled "Drawn in France 1917". Though these are initialled by the artist W.J., they derive from the same source as the 1917 Trenches diary and one wonders if in some other way they belong together.
