Add to basket4to (190 x 265 mm). 5 volumes: 16; 42; 29; 36; 31 ff. (complete), folded in the traditional fukurotoji style. Original covers, each delicately embossed, with block-printed title label on each; new stitching. Stored in a modern blue cloth chitsu case with two horn clasps and blank title slip. Outstanding first edition of a finely illustrated work on the principal arts and industries in 18th century Japan, featuring several well-defined and detailed printed illustrations. This woodblock-printed set is arranged in five volumes, each covering a specific sector of Japanese industry. - In the first volume, Kimura Kenkado (the scholarly name of Kimura Kokyo, 1736-1802), describes the manufacture of sake. Volume two ranges from stone quarrying to honey-making and the food industry. Volumes three and four provide a detailed description of the fishing industry. By contrast, the final volume describes the manufacture of lime, the production of the famous Imari pottery, textile manufacturing, harvesting seaweed, etc. - The numerous high-quality illustrations reflect historically accurate details. The artist was Shitomi Kangetsu (1747-99), a student of Tsukioka Settei (1710-86). Kangetsu was a ukiyo-e painter who studied the ancient methods of both Chinese and Japanese painting and specialised in landscapes and portraits as well as shunga. These illustrations are rich in perfectly drawn details, with beautiful cursive script to contextualise them. - The blue covers have been lightly embossed with a view of the mountains and the sea, creating a considerable effect. Each volume bears three ownership stamps, two in red and one in black ink. Two of these stamps, the first and the last, are well legible and shed some light on the previous owners of these volumes, namely a private collection named Tenshima/Amashima (reading uncertain) and a book seller named Marutsuji Honten. - A refined and beautifully illustrated print that unites the scholarly production of Kimura Kenkado and Shitomi Kangetsu's artistic ukiyo-e. - Upper cover of the final volume with a little worming. Some relatively minor and mostly marginal worming in each volume. New stitching. - 1) Formerly in the collection of Tenshima (Amashima?) Bunko. - 2) Subsequently owned by Marutsuji Honten, a bookshop near Izumibashi. - 3) Latterly in a French private collection. - OCLC 34039632. …

Manuscript cataloging notes laid in at the rear of volume V. During the late Edo period, literacy in Japan increased significantly due to prolonged peace, a booming economy, and the spread of community-run terakoya (temple schools) accessible to both boys and girls across social classes. With a new crop of young readers, commercial publishing boomed to meet demand. Booksellers, very active in Japan's three major cities - Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka - responded to this demand by offering works written in the vernacular, in which Chinese characters were systematically accompanied by readings in phonetic syllabaries (furigana). In this way, scholarly books, previously reserved for the upper echelon, became accessible "to women and children," as Kimura Kenkado (1736-1802), the author of the present volume, writes with satisfaction in his preface. As broad introductions to facets of Japan's culture, the genre of domestic encyclopedias and illustrated guides took root with a new audience. Nihon Sankai Meisan Zue aimed to promote Japan's "renowned products," an initiative that bears the mark of the city where it originated. Osaka played a pivotal role in the Edo period's economy as many regional goods were transported and stored in the city before being redeployed within the country or abroad. Kenkado and Kangetsu additionally placed a great deal of importance on the quality of the products, undoubtedly due to the increase in independent merchants originating from rural areas and not subject to the regulations imposed by guilds. In this sense, the Meisan Zue is also, and even primarily, a guide for gourmands, aiming to inform consumers on how to distinguish authentic products from imitations and the seasons or regions in which these products are available. The severity of specialty items' parallel trade was such that, at the end of the 18th c., the Tokugawa were forced to issue decrees to regulate the food market and secure resources. The five volumes painstakingly catalog regional industries and domestic products from across the islands, including the famous sake brewing in Itami, abalone diving in Ise, apiculture in Kumano, and dried bonito production in Shikoku. …

A set of three books that introduce stereotypes Japanese people held of foreign countries in the mid-Edo period (mid-18th century). The books introduce the people of 61 countries, including Japan, with many illustrations; numerous non-existent and imaginary countries, such as those inhabited by dwarfs and immortals, are also depicted. The shapes of some real countries, particularly those close to Japan such as Korea and Ryukyu, appear to be fairly accurate, but distant countries such as the Netherlands and India are oddly shaped and described as barbaric. The book is literally titled "People of the World" and reflects the medieval imagination about the creatures living on the edges of the Japanese ecumene. Among the creatures are cynocephali, hairy people, monopods, tricephali and human-leopards. The books include 62 black-and-white woodblock-printed illustrations.
