Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A Bibliography of the Writings of Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, M.A.), Sidney Herbert Williams â" First Edition Publication: London, At the Office of "The Bookman's Journal", 1924 Formatting: Large 8vo, pp. [xiv], 142, [4]. Condition Report: Very Good. The book maintains… its structural integrity with a secure, tight binding. The original quarter brown cloth and paper-covered boards show only minor signs of handling, with slight rubbing and bumping to the corners and extremities. The gilt tooling to the spine remains bright and entirely legible. Internally, the text block is clean and largely free of foxing, retaining its traditional untrimmed edges, though there is pronounced offset browning and spotting to the endpapers, a common characteristic of the paper stock used during this period. The hinges are sound, presenting a highly presentable and sturdy copy. Catalogue Note: This is a First Edition, strictly limited to 700 numbered copies, of which 650 were made available for sale. This specific copy is hand-numbered 470 on the limitation page. The volume is bound in the original half-cloth over boards. While later bibliographical works eventually expanded upon this research, this printing remains the pioneering effort to comprehensively catalogue Dodgson's complex literary output. There is no significant previous ownership provenance or bookplates present in this copy. As a limited run, this edition is uncommon on the open market, particularly in sound structural condition, though it frequently appears in specialised Carrollian collections rather than general circulation. A foundational resource for collectors and scholars alike, this bibliography was the first comprehensive attempt to document the expansive and intricate writings of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, universally celebrated as Lewis Carroll. Compiled by Sidney Herbert Williams, this limited-edition volume meticulously details the myriad first editions, scarce pamphlets, and obscure periodical contributions of the Alice in Wonderland author. It remains a handsome and historically significant reference piece that captures the early days of dedicated Carrollian scholarship. N/A (illustrator).

The Lewis Carroll Handbook, Sidney Herbert Williams, Falconer Madan, Roger Lancelyn Green, Denis Crutch â" Revised Edition Publication: Folkestone, Wm Dawson & Sons Ltd, 1979 Formatting: 8vo, pp. xix, 340. Condition Report: Near Fine. The volume itself is tightly bound in its original brown cloth…, demonstrating sharp, unbumped corners and brilliantly unoxidised gilt tooling to the spine. Internally, the pages are crisp, white, and completely free from foxing, damp-staining, or handling wear, evidencing a remarkably well-preserved structure. The original dust jacket remains wholly intact and unclipped, suffering only from light, superficial surface rubbing to the front laminate and minimal edge-wear to the extremities, presenting highly attractively overall. Catalogue Note: This 1979 revised edition of The Lewis Carroll Handbook represents the most comprehensive update to Sidney Herbert Williams and Falconer Madan's original 1931 bibliography. It features Roger Lancelyn Green's initial augmentations alongside Denis Crutch's vital further revisions, expanding significantly upon previous recordings of C.L. Dodgson's extensive literary and academic output. The volume includes a photographic frontispiece portrait of Carroll and is interspersed with full-page plates detailing title pages and manuscript facsimiles essential for correct bibliographical identification. Notably, this copy is accompanied by a loosely inserted 1997 typed letter signed by Neil Hudson, detailing an inquiry into various parish register societies, a charming piece of antiquarian ephemera hinting at a previous owner's broader historical pursuits. As a definitive reference text, this edition remains a highly desirable tool for serious collectors and scholars of nineteenth-century English literature. An essential cornerstone for any serious collector of Lewis Carroll, this extensively updated bibliography systematically catalogs the vast and complex array of publications by the beloved author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Beyond merely listing editions, the handbook delves deeply into the intricate publishing history, pseudonymous works, and mathematical treatises of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, offering invaluable scholarly insights and bibliographical precision.
