First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page verso to Lady Ottoline Morrell, with the author's monogram. Morrell has added a pencil note on Sassoon's poem "To an Old Lady, Dead" on p. 20, identifying the subject as "My grandmother, H. A. Morrell", underlining the word "strange" in Sassoon's description of her as "a very strange old lady, / stiff, sacrosanct, and alabaster-faced". Morrell first became aware of Sassoon after reading his poem "To Victory" in The Times on 15 January 1916. Though the poem was published anonymously, she traced it to him through their mutual friend Edmund Gosse, and wrote to Sassoon of her pleasure at finding "in these dark prison-like days a sympathetic desire to fly out beyond into the beauty and colour and freedom that one so longs for" (quoted in Sassoon, p. 7). They corresponded while Sassoon was at the front: he sent her poems, and she wrote to him that "it was only through Poetry and wild days in the country that one could escape" (quoted in Sassoon, p. 7). When the poet was invalided home from the Somme in August 1916, he decided to visit her at Garsington. Encouraged by Morrell, Sassoon began "to find intellectual grounds for what had been an emotional rejection of the fighting", and his months with her were "among the most eventful as well as the most productive years of his life" (Wilson, p. 281). It was at Garsington in June 1917 that Sassoon penned his controversial "Soldier's Declaration", and over the course of his time there Morrell fell in love with him. Though her feelings were unrequited, Morrell's biographer Miranda Seymour notes that, throughout that time, "every page of her journal was dominated by her love for Sassoon" (Seymour, p. 275).
