First Edition thus (Guignard edition). Full leather contemporary binding. This is rubbed to the edges, with a little loss, but overall is in sound condition. Burgundy label with title and five further panels with gilt decoration to the spine. An attractive period binding. The binding bulges open slightly. No end paper (probably there never was one, as there is also none to the rear), so the work opens at [ai] the title page. The title is creased and there is an area of loss to the right edge - almost intruding on to the text. A little marked to the title. Publisher's device to the title page. A couple of attractive initials / ornaments to the book. Loss to the corner of page 75/75, with perhaps a couple of letters lost. Closed tear without loss to page 125/126. A little worm damage to the margins (not affecting text) to a couple of pages towards the rear of the book. Otherwise the book is clean and bright. [XXII], 544. [vi]. pages. publisher's catalogue & privilege to the rear. 17cm x 10cm. Signatures: a8 ?4 ( -?4) A-Zz in 8s and 4s./ With side-glosses./ Originally published in 1643 under title Histoire de la vie de Henry, dernier duc de Mont-Morency./ "Epistre" signed: C.D./ Publisher's advertisements: [4] pages before Table des chapitres and [6] pages at end. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 5043542. Henri II (15951632) achieved a succession of victories over the Protestant forces and took part in the sieges of Montauban and Montpellier. In 1625, he overcame the French Protestant fleet commanded by the Duc de Soubise, capturing the islands of Ré and Oléron; subsequently, between 1628 and 1629, he defeated the Huguenot leader Henri, Duc de Rohan, in Languedoc. His distinguished conduct in the campaign against the Spaniards in Piedmont in 1630 secured his promotion to the rank of Maréchal of France. Aligning himself in 1632 with the faction of the King's brother, Gaston, Duc d'Orléans, Henri II was taken prisoner at the Battle of Castelnaudary and executed by order of Louis XIII. .
