Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Publlished by Scolar Press for the Navy Records Society, Aldershot, 1991, being volume 130 of the Society publications in this series; 8vo, 155 x 230mm; standard blue cloth titled gilt on the spine and with the roundel of the Society in gilt on the front cover; no dust wrapper called for; pp xvii, 648; three maps in the text; extremely slight fading of the spine but otherwise in near fine condition. . . . . . The volume derives from a long-term study, "FDR's Navy . 1913-1945", the Preface to this work suggesting that the well integrated relationship is taken for granted and that therefore it may be instructive to see how it began "in tentative stuttering fashion" in the dark days of 1917. Unusually for publications such as this from the RN Records Society around half the records are from the US. The work covers the preliminary discussions in January 1917 to the entry of the US into the war later that spring and continues looking a specialist elements such as general co-operation, anti-submarine warfare, the Grand Fleet and the North Sea Barrage, the war in the Mediterranean and the Western Hemisphere, matters ending in May 1919. There's a long list of sources consulted and a detaied index as well a several pages listing the Society's publications.

Sir James Somerville (1882-1949) was one of the great influences on the 20th-century navy, both as a commander of fleets and a pioneer of radio and radar. The Admiral's extensive correspondence, diaries and reports are deposited in the Churchill Archives Centre at Cambridge. These edited selections reveal much of the background about major naval operations in the Second World War. The loneliness of high command is clearly revealed in these highly personal documents, almost 500 of which are reproduced in the book. In particular they show Somerville's frequent disagreements with Churchill - a feature common to all senior British commanders during the war. This copy is from the library of Admiral Sir Brian Thomas Brown KCB CBE (born 31 August 1934) is a senior Royal Navy officer from 1852 to 1991 who went on to be Second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel.
