Es gliedert sich nach einer Vorrede und Einleitung in den systematischen Aufbau des Gesetzbuchs (beginnend mit dem 1. Teil: Allgemeine Bestimmungen). Ein integriertes alphabetisches Register erleichtert das gezielte Nachschlagen von Rechtsbegriffen. Das Sächsische BGB gilt in der Rechtsgeschichte als ein meisterhaftes Gesetzeswerk des 19. Nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums in Zerbst studierte er von 1822 bis 1824 die Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Leipzig. Am 10. September 1825 promovierte er zum Dr. jur. an der Universität Jena. Nach dem Studium ließ er sich zunächst als Regierungsadvokat in seiner Heimatstadt Zerbst nieder. Er war maßgeblich an der Übersetzung des Corpus Iuris Civilis ins Deutsche beteiligt, die er gemeinsam mit Karl Eduard Otto und Bruno Schilling herausgab. Sein bekanntestes wissenschaftliches Werk ist das mehrbändige Lehrbuch 'Das practische gemeine Civilrecht'. Er war Professor an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen.
