De in 1928 opgerichte ClAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne) belichaamde ruim dertig jaar een dynamische vernieuwingsbeweging, met wereldwijd honderden leden onder wie prominenten als Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius en Sigfried…Giedion. De Nederlandse architect en stedenbouwkundige Cornelis van Eesteren (1897-1988) was van 1930 tot 1947 voorzitter van deze organisatie en heeft in het bestaan ervan een belangrijke rol gespeeld. Dit boek geeft voor het eerst inzicht in Van Eesterens betekenis voor de CIAM en werpt daarbij een nieuw licht op de geschiedenis van deze avant-gardeassociatie. Centraal staat het legendarische vierde congres over 'De Functionele Stad' in 1933, dat onder leiding van Van Eesteren werd voorbereid door de Nederlandse ClAM-groep. Rode draad in het verhaal vormt het principe van collectiviteit; het avant-gardistische streven naar samenwerking als basis voor de creatie van een in alle opzichten eigentijdse menselijke leefomgeving. Op grond van overvloedig archiefmateriaal wordt de ontwikkeling van CIAM van binnenuit geschetst en ontstaat - onder de oppervlakte van de 'officiële' geschiedenis - een beeld van haar zoektocht naar een eigen positie en strategie binnen het architectonische en stedenbouwkundige spectrum. Aan bod komen de positiebepaling van de CIAM tijdens de beginjaren, het idee van de CIAM als werkgemeenschap dat vooral leefde onder de Nederlandse en de Zwitserse leden, de voorbereidingen van 'De Functionele Stad' en de uitgevoerde stadsanalyses als bijdrage aan een 'vergelijkende stedenbouw'. Eind jaren dertig raakte de CIAM in een crisis, die ondanks een wederopleving na de oorlog niet meer zou worden overwonnen. De snel groeiende vereniging werd een mondiaal instituut, dat in 1959 door de rebel lerende jongeren van 'Team 10' werd opgeheven. 0 g.

Text: niederlänisch.- Der niederländische Architekt Jan Piet Kloos (1905-2001) fand besondere Inspiration in den Arbeiten von Jan Duiker, dem Vertreter der Nieuwe Bouwen-Bewegung zu Beginn des 20.… Er arbeitete für Jan Duiker am berühmten Sanatorium Zonnestraal in Hilversum.In den frühen 1930er Jahren ließ sich Jan Piet Kloos als selbstständiger Architekt in Delft nieder. Das Rijnlands Lyceum in Wassenaar war sein erster großer Auftrag. Er entwickelte sich zu einem Verfechter des funktionalen Bauens.Vor allem nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg festigte J.P. Kloos seinen Ruf. Er entwarf einen städtebaulichen Plan für den Wiederaufbau von Nijverdal und half beim Aufbau der neuen Gemeinde Nagele im Noordoostpolder. Außerdem war er in den 1950er Jahren am Wiederaufbau von Rotterdam beteiligt, der Stadt, deren Zentrum im Zweiten Weltkrieg durch Bomben zerstört worden war.Jan Piet Kloos entwarf alle Arten von Gebäuden, darunter Schulen, Krankenhäuser und Fabriken.
