Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Near Fine. First Edition. 4to; 207 pages; Clean and secure in original binding in very nice pictorial dustjacket. Authored by Hartwig Isernhagen, this book delves into the life and work of Karl Bodmer, a Swiss artist who traveled to America in the early 19th century. Beautifully illustrated. Text in English and German. In 1834, the Zurich native Karl Bodmer, along with the German naturalist Prince Maximillian and his entourage, embarked on the now legendary "Journey into the Interior of North America." The expedition lasted 28 months. While Maximilian wrote his diary, collected natural specimens, and acquired artifacts from Native Americans, Bodmer created more than 400 drawings of Native Americans, landscapes, and animals. His detailed sketches and watercolors, which later served as models for the printed illustrations of the travel narrative, are considered a great achievement in the artistic representation of foreign peoples. They are also among the most important documents about Native American cultures along the upper Missouri River. This richly illustrated book is Zurich's homage to the great painter, to whom we owe many insights into the way of life and appearance of the Native peoples of the Plains and prairies. It combines biographical narrative and analytical essays, illuminating the unique significance of these drawings, watercolors, and engravings at the intersection of exact science and art. …

Hardcover. Condition: gut. - Karl Bodmer, born in Zurich in 1809, is well known in the present day for the magnificent illustrations he made in 1832-34 on an extensive expedition led by the German aristocrat and scientist Prinz Maximilian zu Neuwied along the upper Missouri and Ohio rivers. Bodmer's more than 400 detailed sketches and watercolours are unsurpassed until the present day and still recognised as an epitome in depicting alien culture, and they are among the most important documents of Native American culture. This book marks Bodmer's 200th anniversary and is an homage to the painter who gave so many detailed and lively insights into the way of life and appearance of the native people in the North American plains and prairies. It presents all 81 engravings after his watercolours used to illustrate Prince Maximilian's travels in the interiors of North America, besides of many of his original watercolours and sketches and also photographs of artefacts collected during the expedition. The illustrations are complemented by essays on Bodmer's life and investigating key aspects of his oeuvre as well as the particular nature of his work between scientific illustration and art. Autor: Hartwig Isernhagen, born 1940, has been professor of American literature at the University of Basel, Switzerland, from 1981-2004. He is an expert of Karl Bodmer and his work and curator of an exhibition marking Bodmer's 200th anniversary at the North American Native Museum in Zurich in 2009.
