Er erhielt seine Ausbildung in Leipzig und Hannover. Ab den 70er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts lebte er in Wien, wobei er die ersten Jahre in diversen Ateliers gearbeitet haben dürfte. Seine ersten selbständig errichteten Bauten datieren aus den frühen 80er Jahren. Infolge der Baukonjunktur der Gründerzeitjahre, in denen die Infrastruktur der schnell wachsenden Städte ausgebaut werden musste, gehörte er bald zu den erfolgreichsten Architekten der Ringstraßenära.
