Inscribed on the verso of the frontispiece and SIGNED in full by the author "To David Low with the perpetrator's Best regards . 1919". This is also repeated upon the back cover and spine, to a greater degree. Covers are moderately thumbed and rubbed, with the occasional scuff mark on front, back and spine. Spine sunned. Head and tail of spine bumped, head corners also bumped bear some heavy wear and tear. Binding is tidy. Free endpapers, pastedowns, title pages and most pages throughout bear discolouration. Page edges are moderately discoloured, particularly at the head edge. He later moved to Australia in 1885 and later joined the Bulletin. A cat became a characteristic feature of Souter's sketches. This book contains 37 examples of Souter's art nouveau mode. George Lane. 669pp, portrait frontis: John Wesley with tissue guard, bw illustrations, appendices, index, decorative endpapers. Front hinge cracked. Top edge gilt. Binding worn at leather spine and corners, with loss of sections at the spine head and foot, with some loss at the spine. Tape has been placed over joins between cloth and leather on the rear board. Or red cloth lightly worn, rubbed, stained and flecked. Internally the book is in good and clean condition. The book is in two parts: The Mission; and The Church. It was the first attempt to set out the beginnings of Methodism in Australia and Polynesia; and was the first history of any section of the Protestant Church in New South Wales. Size: 4to.

Slight rubbing to covers with a slight ding at spine, overall sound, clean, very good indeed.
