First Edition. Octavo. Publisher's brown cloth with pictorial gilt cover device; gilt spine titles; {1}-87,[1]pp; hand-colored frontispiece and 49 separately-numbered leaves of plates (uncolored). Straight and tight, with sunning to front cover and spine; internally quite fresh, with just occasional faint foxing to the plates. Gift inscription to front pastedown, "Th.R. from D.K.;" undated; later (?) ownership signature of a "W.J. Dundas," undated, possibly Scottish lawyer and mathematician William John Dundas (1849-1921). A quite nice copy, though the plates are uncolored. Though not so indicated, this is the first part of what would become a two-part work, with the second part issued in 1856.
