Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, xiii, 207, [1] pp. From the preface: "The formation of a collection of manuscripts relating to the City, County, and University of Oxford under the name of MSS. Topographical Oxfordshire (MSS. Top. Oxon.) goes back to 1884. The contents of the collection up to 1890 were described in vol. V of the Summary Catalogue, and from then onwards to 1915 in vol. VI. The plan of these volumes was to describe the collections in chronological order of accession. Thus the descriptions of MSS. Top. Oxon. have to be looked for under each year and were not collected together. The First World War made impossible the continuance of the publication of a catalogue of accessions year by year, and it has seemed sensible to describe all the accessions of MSS. Top. Oxon. from 1916 onwards together in one volume." Among the more important collections of manuscripts covered by this volume are those of the following collectors and historians: Frederick Joseph Morrell (1811-82), and his son Frederick Parker Morrell (1839-1908); Percy Manning (1870-1917); Falconer Madan (1851-1935); H. E. Salter (1863-1951); Canon W. J. Oldfield (1857-1934); Henry Minn (1870-1961). Oxford Historical Society. Publications New series ; vol. 17. Near Very Good.…

Cloth. Condition: Very Good Indeed. First edition. Peter Spencer Spokes's personal copy of his fascinating study of the 'Coats of Arms in Berkshire Churches'; reprinted in parts from 'The Berkshire Archaeological Journal' and held in three handsome clamshell slipcases. Peter Spencer Spokes was a renowned architectural historian, photographer, and regular contributor and eventual editor of 'The Berkshire Archaeological Journal'. His fascinating study of 'Coats of Arms in Berkshire Churches' was published in parts in the journal from Vol. 39, Part 1. (Spring, 1935) to Vol. 45, Part I, 1941. This is an incomplete set, lacking the part from volume 39, No. 2. This fascinating study of the 'Coats of Arms in Berkshire Churches' provides an accurate record and description of heraldic designs with accompanying short historical and genealogical notes. This set contains the parts from the following volumes of 'The Berkshire Archaeological Journal': Vol 35, No. 1. [Vol 35, No. 2.] 'Continued from Vol 35, No. 1.' [Vol 36, No. 1.] 'Continued from Vol 35, No. 2.' [Vol 36, No. 2.] 'Continued from Vol 36, No. 1.' [Vol 36, No. 1.] 'Continued from Vol 36, No. 2.' Vol. 37, No. 2. Vol. 43, No. 1. Vol. 43, No. 2. Vol. 44, No. 1. Vol. 44, No. 2 Vol. 45, No. 1. This set also contains the following five issues of 'The Berkshire Archaeological Journal' edited by Ernest W. Dormer, where Spokes's work was originally printed: Vol. 39. No. 1. Spring, 1935 Vol. 39. No. 2. Autumn, 1935 Vol. 40. No. 1. Spring, 1936 Vol. 40. No. 2. Autumn, 1936 Vol. 41. No. 1. Spring, 1937 Vol. 41. No. 2. Autumn, 1937 (This copy has been rebound in a full cloth binding, with an institutional bookplate of 'The Genealogical Society Library' to the front pastedown. The Berkshire Archaeological Society was established in 1871 with the purpose of detailing the study of the archaeology in the county of Berkshire. Originally publishing annual reports and transactions, in 1889 it began to publish the Quarterly Journal of the Berkshire Archaeological and Architectural Society. The following volumes have been rebound in a full cloth binding (lacking the original paper wraps), signed by Spokes to the front pastedown with additional alternating blanks for note taking, featuring copious notes by the author: Vol 35, No. 1. Spring 1931; [Vol 35, No. 2]; [Vol 36, No. 1]; [Vol 36, No. 2]; [Vol 37, No. 1]; [Vol 38, No. 1]; [Vol 39, No. 1].
