This presentation was made two weeks before Sprot's death, aged 77, on 19 March at his estate in Lilliesleaf. The recipient, John Stewart Muir (1845-1938), practised medicine in nearby Selkirk and was the family doctor, in which capacity he certified Sprot's death. A large part of the first volume is concerned with Sprot's services during the Indian Rebellion, during which he was the executive engineer to the Rajpootana Field Forces. He commanded the 91st Highlanders from 1869 to 1876 and was promoted major-general on the active list in 1883. Raugh 6644; not in Bruce, Riddick, or Sorsky. 2 vols, octavo. Portrait frontispieces, 18 plates.
